My question I asked people when I saw this was, "When was the last time a counterspell that cost a minimum of 3 to cast was played in Vintage?"
I couldn't think of any.
Sure it's strong, but Vintage needs strong AND aggressively costed, especially for countermagic.

Mixed feelings. Not sure it's better than flusterstorm, but I guess it's nice that it hits planeswalkers?
Maybe if landstill becomes more popular it will become a card to expect in the mirror.
Also, Mindbreak trap is a card.

I was thinking mostly just the overload piece of it for Vintage. The counter target spell is not good for Vintage, I admit that.

I like the direction this set is going. They're hosing counterspells pretty hard, what with a series of playable uncounterable spells and Nivmagus. It's sort of like split second, except instead of Boomerang, Shock, and Naturalize, we're getting uncounterable versions of Wrath of God and Counterspell, at a reasonable cost.
This is a neat development for Vintage because, at the moment, interacting on the stack is still king. When you choose between a counterspell and duress effect, for example, its usually wise to go for the counterspell. This set might shake up the meta enough that this is no longer the case, and that's good for diversity.

So...I'm not quite getting overload. Is it in addition to the casting cost, or instead of the casting cost? Cause 1UUR doesn't seem terrible for an uncounterable mindbreak trap. 1UUUURR seems god awful though.
edit - nevermind it's instead. Which makes this card not so awful. Makes the mechanic not so awful actually, should they have a decent costed overload card.

The card has a natural competition with Mindbreak Trap, but it's also countered by Mindbreak Trap. Probably countered for free in any situation where you're busting out the Overload and expecting it to save the day. If you're having a large stack war, this isn't necessarily the trump card it would like to be.
