I am involved in this story merely as the supplier of the murder weapon and filming the crime, but here is a nugget from the storyteller himself, via r/MagicTCG on Reddit:

Quote
The year is 1995. Dan and his kitchen table D&D group are learning the ins and outs of a game called magic. The group of teenagers don't have a lot of money, but they're visiting a local comic book store and buying stuff hit or miss.
Dan has grown quite fond of this game. He invested $60 in cash and cards into a Mox Ruby. Super proud, he shows it off to his play group. A friend who cannot afford nicer things and doesn't care about the game nearly as much as Dan becomes embittered.
One day, the Dan is playing magic. He draws a card, it is a Repentant Blacksmith with "MOX RUBY" written on it. Confused, he goes through his deck and can't find the real one. He assumes his friend took it and calls him, infuriated. He did take it and told Dan he "shouldn't take this stupid game so seriously." Dan eventually gets his Mox back and the two have remained good friends for years.
Next week, Dan's friend is turning 30. Dan wanted to do something special for him; meaningful. After some trading and bartering this weekend at GP Philadelphia, he achieved his goal.

There were lots of cringes. Lots.
*edited for clarity, sorry I am hungover as all hell

To accompany this a few days later, I supplied my copy of the video: http://youtu.be/pE_PgdznaZU

That is an awesome and thoughtful and funny thing to do for a friend.  That being said, it definitely made me cringe.

I'm picturing the anthropomorphizing of MtG cards in the setting of a regular pub...

At one corner are the real low-life cards: basic lands and bulk commons that have been proxied into new rares and SB cards.  Latest-core-set Plains with 'Scavenging Ooze' or 'Snapcaster Mage' sharpied across their forehead, drinking a PBR and harassing cards done by rebecca guay, etc.

This day is their happy moment, as they look up from their drudgery to see, walking through the door, this once proud dandy brought low.

That's pretty cool.  It reminds me of my white weenie deck - Revenge of the plains.  After years of sharpieing plains as P9, I have built a white weenie deck (with 2 lotuses and 2 pearls) and have one complete set of P9, Time Vault, Mishra's Workshops, and Bazaars of Baghdad sharpied to make 18 "plains".  The deck is ballin'.
