I posted this elsewhere and decided I wanted to share it here too.

Ebert's death has hit me harder than I would have thought possible.  I never really watched him on TV and I wasn't a regular reader of his work, but I did read him occasionally, and he was always the gold standard in my mind for what it meant to be a critic.  His intelligence and wit were always readily apparent in anything he wrote, and the vitality with which he went on with his life even after losing his ability to eat, drink, or speak was truly inspiring.  He lived a long, happy, full, worthwhile life and died at peace with his wife at his side and he did what he loved until the day he died.  That's probably the best any of us can hope for.

I'll be making it a priority to watch his commentary track for Dark City this weekend, which I didn't even realize was on the DVD until yesterday.  We won't be seeing him at the movies anymore, but he'll still be there regardless.
