I don't think a card needs to explode in value for you to see a return on an $0.80 investment. Literally  if it sees play in any format you'll likely triple the invested sum.

Painful Truths should be played in any deck with the mana to cast it. It doesn't matter that it is sorcery speed. It doesn't matter that you need three colors. What matters is that it nets cards at a rate matched only by Treasure Cruise, Ancestral Recall, or Demonic Tutor for Ancestral Recall.

Fact or Fiction, a blue instant, nets three cards and puts two in the yard. Seeing how it was once restricted, I'm pretty positive it's an overall better card drawer than Painful Truths.

Sol Ring, Mana Vault, Mana Crypt, Tolarian Academy, Black Lotus, basic lands, Library of Alexandria, Mox Jet, Mox Sapphire, Drain mana, Dark Ritual, etc.  Even though it costs 4, its still easier to cast than Painful Truths.  So much that Painful might as well cost 5.

How are you going to compare Painful Truths to Ancestral Recall and then dismiss Fact or Fiction entirely without even using a complete sentence?

FoF is too different a game to compare it to straight draw. It is more often a combo style piece similar to gifts with the upside that it can just be +3 of the worst cards out of 5.

I think the comparison to Treasure Cruise is closer since it is a draw 3 and tc is not always going to cost 1, but even that is a bit far removed since TC is so variable.

No the most apt comparison is nights whisper for sure, a card that does see some play. If your deck would run whisper and can consistently produce 3 colors, i fail to see how this card would not be a consideration at the least.

I'm not a big fan of this card, in no format really. I'm sure it will see some play in Standard once Cruise and Dig are out but even there it is no card you just slam into your deck as a 4 of. While lifeloss used to be neglectable, is it a real drawback nowadays as you can't just chain copies together without losing the game. Even in Vintage there are a couple of effects that make you pay life so this becomes a very situationally card. Drawing 4 against Thalia sounds great unless you realize you face a soon to be lethal board. Sorcery speed plus the unrestriction of the instand speed no lifeloss force pitch Tfk put the final nail in the coffin.

I plugged a single Painful Truths into my 4C Pyro/Tendrils list to replace the second Dig Through Time and loved it so much that I have since dropped a 4th Preordain for a second one.  My list runs a full suite of Moxen, so turn two Painful Truth for 3 is extremely realistic.  Painful Truth has also allowed me to play my Pyromancers more aggressively, especially when paired with Gushes.  Needless to say the synergy between Gush and Painful Truth is really bonkers...even if your turn 3 Gush is countered, it will still allow you to float the correct mana, replay a land and Painful Truth for 3.

yeah, it continues to bewilder me why this card isn't seeing play in basically every deck with Underground Seas.

Im in the same boat as you guys. I think this is one of the best draw cards printed in a very long time. I have bought every copy from my local shop plus more.

This card is deceptively easier to cast for 3 than it seems, especially with off color moxen. Any deck with underground seas and full moxen can easily play two of these.
