Yup I had a 3-0-2 record (8-2-2) for the entire game record and got placed 9th.  There were only 5 rounds for over 30 people.  Anyway for the cool report read Ray's(iamfishman,) aka Mr. Waterbury, tournament report.   I'm just going to list the detals quickly.

I'm running UW Landstill again.  The same I made 5th at in Waterbury.
http://www.themanadrain.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9241

Round 1

Game 1
Mike D playing GAT:  Mike wins the Roll
I remember fighting for mana and he gets a ton of draw and a Tog smashes my face.

Game 2
COTV is king here as multiple spells for 1 are countered due to Mike's error.  This game is close and a top-decked Decree for 4 wins the game when Mike is only at 3 life.

Game 3
We run out of time early in this game and it ends up a draw.

Round 2: 0-0-1 (1-1-1)
Scott playing UR Landstill: Scott wins the roll

Game 1:
I resolve an early Standstill and keep the pressure on with a small Decree.  Wastes control the manlands on the board and eventually I overpower with manlands and decree tokens.

Game 2:
He resolves and early standstill and I end up getting off another decree.  This wins the game.

Round 3: 1-0-1 (3-1-1)
Mike (Myketog) Playing his rogue burn deck:  Mike wins the roll.

Game 1:
We both keep somewhat questionable hands.  Early wastelands have us drawing and discarding cards.  I hold on to cards called Misdirection and those help me win when I start to see land.  A misdirection of a shrapnel blast was the key move later in this game.

Game 2:
I side out STPs and some stifles for COTV and BEB.  Mike tell me later that he seemed to "miss" the meltdowns that were in his sideboard.  This is why he said that.
On first turn I drop Land, Lotus and sack for U.  I drop chalice for 1 which he responds to by Lightning Bolt.  My other U is used to cast the BEB in my hand.  Hooray Chalice for 1 on the board.  A turn of two later I drop a standstill.  I draw another Chalice and in my glee I forget that I even have a standstill on the board.  I break my own Standstill by dropping a chalice for 2.  Mike says, "I have responses," and proceeds to ponder for quite a while.  Eventually he cast a Price to Progress and I take 8 then another that I force.  Unfortunately for Mike he has no more spells that are not 2 or 1 and we enjoy the rest of the game in a fun manner with him fetching with his own land to kill himself.

Round 4: 2-0-1 (5-1-1)
SCOTT LIMOGES playing GAT: I win the roll

Game 1:  This is the third match I've had with Scott in the past two tournaments.  We met in Waterbury and each won a match, his being the more important top 8 match so he could go on to win the lotus.
It's hard to remember this game it takes a long time and we end up at 6 life for me and 4 for Scott.  Scott however ends up removing my blockers and swings with a 6/6 Dryad for the win.

Game 2:
This is also a foggy matchup, that's the problem doing a report days later.  I believe that I had pretty good control this game and swung with man lands for most of the damage.

Game 3:  Never really starts before time is called.  We sit there and for the heck of it play our five turns out.  Scott gets good stuff like a Deep Analysis and a Tog, but I have STP, FOW and a walk to take another turn up if I wanted to.  Regardless we didn't have enough turns.

Round 5: 2-0-2 (6-2-2)  I'm sitting at table 7 have been paired down.
Chet Stagg playing UR Fish:  Chet wins the roll.

Game 1:
I play the mana denial game after dropping a turn 1 standstill.  Chet never sees over 2 lands I and Mana Leak or Drain all the Cloud of Faeries he tries to cast.  Man lands smash for the win.

Game 2:  Is a similar match.  We both Waste lands however between counter magic on his Faeries and the mana denial game I come through again.

Result:  9th having not even given up a match and going 3-0-2.

Awesome job having another great finish right after Waterbury.  It's unfortunate that you got screwed by the weird Cape rulings.  See you at the next event, and test out those Greaves!

I agree that disrupting Urfish's mana base is viable, and I certainly can't disagree with the results, but are cloud of faeries the threat you really want to counter?  I thought the wizards, standstills and in your case, null rods, were the bigger threats?

@GI:  Normally I would agree, but considering that he had a hand full of cards at the time and only 2 mana sources on the board.  I countered the creature that allows him to untap his lands.  I had more counter magic and Standstills to follow up with following his turn.  By robbing him of the Faeries I stopped a minor threat from hitting the table and stopped a folow up spell after the Faeries.

Suppose I had not countered the Faeries and he dropped yet another or even three?  Then he could cast the threat he was aiming for.  So now he has 3 threats on the board that I have to use resources to remove and I counterd one genuine threat.  Do you think that was the correct play?

I feel by countering the Faeries I locked the turn to a close, then swing with my threats and dropped a Standstill or wasted another of his lands to keep him at 1 land or 2 on his turn.

The more I think about it the more it makes sense.

I didn't know if it was beyond the second turn (ie he missed a land drop), or if you had a waste.  I was thinking about it from a general control perspective, but its quite different that you have your own standstills, and that you can play the mana denial game so effectively.  Basically you're trying to out-tempo a tempo deck.
