Recently, a local Wizards store decided to hold a T0 (No banned/restricted list) tourney.  The first and most obvious choice for everybody turns to Academy.

But you don't have all the cards.


I'm planning on playing in this tourney, and I have NO CLUE how to build a good Academy deck with the card restrictions I have.  Hell, I don't even have a clue how to build completely unrestricted Academy.

So I pose you this challenge.

Using this cardpool, throw out some ideas.  If you feel so inclined, also feel free to throw out an unrestricted card pool academy.

That's it.  May have a few other necessary things.  Ask if interested.  The numbers in Parens are how many I'll POSSIBLY have.  if you're only going to build one deck, build it with the larger numbers.

I'll take a swing at it.

First, you only need maybe 18 cheap artifacts. Also, I'm going to assume you can get at least two Wheel of Fortune.

You might not need Mind over Matter with four Spiral and four Frantic Search.

There, that's 63 cards. Work from there.

All the draw7s mean you don't need stuff like Meditate. Four Academies and eight untapping spells means you don't need Helms. There's a critical mass of Draw7s available so I cut some Tinkers. I also figured that Windfall isn't as good as a "real" draw7 (Twister, Spiral, Jar, or Wheel).

If Yawgmoth's will is debated in T1 academy, it's far and away unneeded in T0. Same deal with Vampiric - What need you a bad Demonic when you can just draw into everything?

I took advantage of the extra Pearls to use Abeyance over Misdirections three and four.

You may want a second, backup kill card in case some dork wants to play Extract.

I would think you might do away with four of those Draw7s or tutors, if you can get your hands on 4 Contract from Below!

they did say no BANNED or restricted list.  And contract is the most broken card of all times.  God I loved playing for Ante...

but if you can, Academy would be a complete house if you used Contract.

     Other than that Matt's list looks pretty good.  

the only thing is, I might try to play Five-color Trix cause in T0, it kind rocks.

Lots of Academy sounds like a good metagame to be playing control. Monoblue packed with extra blue power with a full complement of Misdirection and possibly Divert (lots of Time Walk and Ancestral action going on) should be strong and shouldn't face any of its worst matchups.
