Today's Mirrodin preview is the first card that truly makes me wonder if it can have any potential on type 1. Probably it'll be a bit hyped but will be not as good as it seems.
Here it goes...
Vedalken Archmage 2UU Creature - Vedalken Wizard Whenever you play an artifact spell, draw a card. 0/2

Makes Hurkyl's good.
It could have at least been a 0/4, though.

I just hope no one builds those crappy decks he posted and hopes to win with them. Now as for t1 play, I think the thing just costs too much. At lower mana cost it would likely have been broken, but normally you want to drop your mana artifacts early so this thing will likely be useless. The only deck I could see it being realistic in is maybe some academy combo build.

Discuss. This card is really really slow. UU in the cc makes is a pain to cast and by the time you have the mana for it you should be winning with Wires/Orbs/Stacks and the sorts. That and I hate Enchantress and this cards makes brown decks feel like Enchantress, i'll just stick to my Skullcaps. Also, it's targetable and dies to Trisk, Core, Burn, Swords, Balance, etc etc.\n\n

Too expensive, too expensive and too expensive to be of use in T1.
Did I mention it was too expensive?

The only 4 drop creatures I see played now are in reality 2 drops since they are powered out by Workshops. 4 (including UU in the cost) is just too much.

I'm going to playtest it in Academy. It could be a decent draw engine, especially once Helms of Awakening are in play and he only costs UU to cast. Not to mention 11 of my 12 lands produce all five colors - and my 12th land produces blue only.

It could be viable in Academy since it has loads of acceleration, but I really see it more as a casual card really...

The card is expensive, but it is tremendously potent. I would be surprised if no one found a solid deck for it. Perhaps a tendrils-based combo deck would be able to use this card, turning H's Recall into a Contract From Below.

Contract from Below without the discard and ante part of course. One of my friends plays Eggcademy. He's going to want these for sure I'd imagine. Helm of Awakening + this guy + eggs = a lot of cards.

i agree it is a bit pricey to cast, but i think that it will be an amazing sideboard card for academy varients, against permission.
