The short version: PT Funk(MattTG) over Keeper of Doom(Googhos) 2-1
My opponent and I, with permission from the TO, played a day late because we had both been very busy these last weeks. I nearly didn't play today, but my real-life Magic friend couldn't visit today, so on with the show!
GAME ONE: In the first game, I won the die roll and opened with Swamp-Dark Ritual-Phyrexian Negator-Black Lotus-Hypnotic Specter, very strong. My opponent managed a Diabolic Edict off a City of Brass, and I sacrificed the Hyppie, thinking that with my River Boa about to come out next turn I could try for a turn four kill (turn 2 cast Boa and swing for 5, turns 3 and 4 swing for seven). This proved to be a mistake as I was soon Balanced down to nuttin'. A Force of Will pitching Fire/Ice countered something at some point, and later on another Force countered another Something with another Fire/Ice.
...his registered decklist only had one Fire/Ice in it.
Upon inspecting the log, we found that he had accidentally (he was unused to Apprentice) returned the original Fire/Ice to his library instead of removing it from the game. Not knowing what else to do, I said we should just scrap the game and start fresh, carrying over my winning die roll.
GAME ONE, MARK TWO: I gamble on an opening of Mox Jet, Lotus, Specter and no land. Sensing my mana-lightness, he cast Dismantling Blow on my lone Mox. The Specter resolves and does hit five times, nabbing a Morphling and Regrowth...but in the next eight turns I draw ZERO mana sources. Eventually he cast Demonic Tutor and I knew he had yet to play a land this turn, and also an Undiscovered Paradise in hand. I assumed he'd go for Paradise, Swords but instead he passed the turn, not even laying the land (probably to guard against the Specter). Though the Specter nabbed a fifth card, it was promptly Edicted on my opponent's turn. The next two turns I managed to scramble together two Forests. Whee. A Sylvan Library and eventual Edict do little to stop the Morphling that does me in.
GAME TWO: Memory's a little hazy on this one, but it was long and well-fought by both sides. After fighting back and forth for a bit, with him enjoying a Library of Alexandria and me a Sylvan Library, he resolves Compost. Though this looks bad for me, I am able to Duress out a Spiritmonger, whose attack brings him down to one life, though he has a Zuran Orb in play. Some mixups about putting cards back on top of the library ensue, but it's clear that he can't survive the eleven damage Monger and Negator are about to lovingly administer.
GAME THREE: Now, this game I have a log for, and upon examining it just now, I found this message: 18:21:12 googhos has a 57 card deck. Which is even stranger considering his registered decklist is 61 cards. Might want to get that checked out before next round, mein Freund.
Though he opens with a first-turn Library, he played first and only has six cards in hand, so when my first-turn Wasteland hits he can't even replace the card. Ditto my turn two Strip Mine. His third land is a Wasteland, which I respond to with Swamp, Duress (taking Compost over Force). He plays a Lotus and a second land (Tundra), which all combines to (hardcast) Force of Will on my next-turn River Boa (off a Forest - I fear not the Wasteland!). With that menace gone I feel safe in my next play - a Mind Twist for his entire three-card hand.
18:24:59 googhos says:'oh no'
The Twist took out a Force, Swords (!), and another Wasteland. Time to go about the business of killing him.
Lo, for the mighty may Mana Drain my Specters, thou shalt yet suffer at the hands of Phyrexian Negator, and moreover, burn for three! Mana Drain - the best Lightning Bolt ever.
The next few turns are altogether too ghastly to repeat in any detail, as my Negator shreds his flesh as he conjures up nought but land. I consider playing my Spiritmonger to shorten the kill by a turn, but I pause - he has at least 3B or 1W available. My thoughts:
1) If he draws Balance, I'll be glad I kept Monger in hand. 2) If he draws The Abyss, I will be saddened beyond measure.
In the end he draws neither, and I take Round One's head home as a trophy.
Log of game three follows.
