Again, a Meta-game shift and an incredibly poor turn-out for a Beta Mox Emerald. Only twelve contestants show up and there were only 8 at ten to seven.
Anyway, the decks that were present this week were:
1 Academy (type w/ power artifact) 1 Turbonevyn 1 Nether Void 1 W/b Weenie 1 Squirrel Craft 1 Pox 2 Sligh 3 Keeper (types, one was heavely meta-gamed vrs. combo) 1 funky Haunting Echo's deck (me)
The torny went 3 rounds of swiss before the top 8. Highlights were: Academy, (last times winner, coming with a more meta-gamed build) droping all three rounds, Turbonevyn going off by third turn every game, W/b Weenie winning 5 games in three rounds of Swiss and shooting Keeper 2 straight in top8s, and someone saying. "no one sideboards Blue Elemental Blasts!" As for me, as always, I draw mono-black first round. This being my worst match-up I thought that this would end as a loss for me. I did not expect to see Void on first turn. So, game one is a loss and on to game two after board. Game two he first turn duresses and second turn Voids to a slower victory. Second I play W/b weenie. Game one is a victory for me. Game two I am fully prepared for him and I have Moat and Abyss by third turn. I then mana flood for 4 turns and he takes out the Moat. Then mana flood for 4 more turns as I go down kicking and screeming. Time is called 4 turns into game three. Que lastima? Third I play Sligh. Because I am knowledgable of my meta-game I have quite a few cards that are useful against Sligh MD including Moat. I own him in game one. Knowing that the red blasts are coming in, in force from his SB, I side out quite a few blue cards, my SB swing is 8 in total. Unfortunately, in the next two games I fail to get one of the three COP:red I boarded . No matter how many rounds there are in a torny I will alway play sligh and mono-Black, but such is life.
Back to the real action, I now have a ringside seat for the top 8, so I break out my notepad. The Top 8 looks like this:
1) Sligh (not the guy I lost to) VRS. Keeper (piloted by LambchopNYC). Sligh burns him out before I can get a look at their game one. Game two is won in equally short fashion, (thanks to my pre-torny deck clinic) as sligh second turns a black lotus into a blood moon with a redEblast back up. Winner: Sligh (2/0)
2) Turbonevyn (piloted by LordofGoats) VRS. Nether Void. Void owns game one. I think he had it won on turn three, but it took a few more turns to finish it off. Game two and three, Turbo goes off on turn two and three respectivly and makes short work of Void. Winner: Turbonevyn (2/1)
3) Keeper (the best build present) VRS. Pox. Pox owns game one, though I did not get to see much of this game I was there for the coup'de'gra, which was a Nether Spirit/Rack/Cursed Scroll beatdown. Game two rolls around and early in the game the unknown Pox pilot's parents show up, he was forced to withdraw. Though the keeper player claimed victory was at hand, I and the others were sceptical. Winner: Keeper (0/1?)
4) W/b Weenie VRS Keeper (the janglely meta-gamed version or combohate.dec) Keeper never really got off the ground in either of the match's two short games. I don't think Keeper gave a thought to WW being in the meta-game after the last torny and was all loaded up to own combo. On the other hand W/b Weenie was supurbly piloted and handed out it's ass-whiping in heaping helpings. Though I did notice one play mistake that caused him to win game 2, two turn later than he should have. Winner: W/b Weenie (2/0)
The final four shapes up sort of odd. With three Keepers in the top8, only one survives to final4, and only on the strength of a withdrawal.
1) Keeper VRS Sligh. First game, Keeper explodes out of the gate. Within three turns he goes Tubro-morphling and the game ends a scant four turns later. Game two all looks well for sligh early on and Keeper is quickly down to one life. Sligh's Blood Moon falls to a BlueEblast?@#!? (I thought no one SBed them Goat!?) and he fails to deal the last point of damage. Winner: Keeper (2/0)
2) Turbonevyn VRS W/B Wennie (Weenie in the final4 WTF?). Game one is touchy. Weenie manages to stop Turbo from going off with a well placed Seal of Cleansing to the Fastbond. But, fails to kill before a Regrowthed Bond sets Turbo off a scant few turns later. Game two is a blur of a turn two Fastbond, and sixty cards later the game is over. Winner: Turbonevyn (2/0)
THE FINALS
Turbonevyn VRS Keeper. This might have been an interesting match. Unfortunately, Turbo goes first and goes off first turn. Keeper without a Force of will in hand sits helplessly as Turbo drops: land, bond, lotus, horn, land, land, horn, land, gush, land, land, ansestral, horn, chasm, and Keeper goes into Scoop Mode. Game two is not much more exciting, as it takes until his third turn for Turbo to go off. Keeper, who's FoW is redEblasted sits helpless after Bond resolves, and Chasm is the first land droped. Moments later Scoop Scoop.
Congats to TheLordofGoats on his victory and the Beta Mox Emerald. He has been in the finals all of the last three Tornys, and I was begining to think, "always the bridesmaid and never the Bride."
Missing from the meta-game, this time, were: 2 Sui, 1 Sligh, 1 Oath, 1 U/rphidian, 1 bad Forbidian, 1 Fires, 1 R/B Land Destruction, 1 Stompy, 1 Zoo (type) and 1 Burn.
In a scant three weeks, first prize is an Unlimited Mox Pearl. And... Three weeks later first prize is an Unlimited Black Lotus and second prize is an Unlimited Timewalk. Prereg is being set up for that one and you can get contact info in that post. I am hoping that alot of support for T1 will be put forth for that one. I think it's time we made some noise.
until then,
