[Matt The Great]

For those of you who only want results, PT Funk (MattTG) over Su-Chi Mana (Porc) 2-1.

I keep an opening hand of Diabolic Edict, Duress, Hymn to Tourach, Swamp, Forest, Yawgmoth's Will and some third land - only to find out that Porc has the wrong deck! When we draw up again,  get two "Lonely Forest" hands in a row and settle on my five-card hand with a Bayou, Ritual, and Hymn. "God dammit!" will become my rallying cry for the rest of the match. Much of the curses I emit are targeted at his slow play and Random-Miser levels of "hrmms". Logs will accompany each game-post.

An early Sylvan Library does its level best to get me out of my mana woes and shortly after casting his second Mask I drop a Pernicious Deed. This stalls him for a while. He resolves TWO Opportunities, and drops a pair of face-down creatures. They turn out to be Juggernaut and Su-Chi. This whole time I've been running on two land, with a Mox Emerald in hand because I don't want to lose more than I have to when I finally use the Deed. However, the Mox mana will not be enough to kill his artifact creatures, and I die because I failed to draw a fourth mana source. I try to be absolutely horrible and cast a Negator to block with, but it is Force of Will'd and I die. Possibly I should have dropped the Mox earlier and tried to cast Negator, who knows.

Just how evil, Porc had yet to find out. -1 Phyrexian Negator, -1 Regrowth, -1 Sylvan Library, -1 Wasteland, +2 Diabolic Edict, +2 Powder Keg.

A slow start on both our parts. After an early Powder Keg, my next spell is a Duress seeing a pair of Mana Drains and some less-interesting stuff. I take a Drain, which he should have used on the Duress. Poor play. My Hypnotic Specter takes the other Mana Drain for the team while he casts something face-down with one mana, which is clearly Flying Men. The Juggernaut has hit me for an unconscionable ten damage, but I have Will in hand. My plan is to Keg the Juggernaut and Edict the unknown creature. The Keg goes off as scheduled, and to test the waters I try another Specter, which resolves. Well, here goes nothing - Edict catches the Dreadnought!

This only serves to enrage my opponent, who drops Su-Chi and another Juggernaut to oppose my Specter. However, I am undaunted...

Oh you DAMN right. I blunt his attack with the Specter, dropping to six, and Deed the board clean, which also snags his Mask. When he does nothing on his turn, I know it is time to turn up the heat. I drop a Keg (resolves) and a Boa (Force'd). Spiritmonger is Mana Drain'd, but he burns for all five. Goody-goody gumdrops! His own mana has done nine to him so far. Heh, Mana Drain sucks so bad. Sensing that his defenses have all been torn asunder, I go for the throat.

[Matt The Great]

-2 Phyrexian Negator, -1 Regrowth, -1 Wasteland, +2 Diabolic Edict, +2 Powder Keg. I reasoned that a few of his threats were so incredibly dangerous that even a weak digging effect was better than a Negator. Will my gamble be correct? Read on and see.

He starts off with a first-turn Mask. Harrumph. I get a Lotus and cast Boa (resolves) and Hymn (Misdirected). Shit. I don't trust Apprentice's random discarding module, so I lay the cards on the table and roll a die.

God dammit. I'm RIPE for a savaging right now. And never trust the random discard. I've seen too many games where it'd just bury the last card in my hand, over and over again, something like ten times in a row (I was goldfishing some Wild Research deck).

Anyway. Porc begins suffering a series of snakebites, and I attempt a Negator, much to the shock of my opponent, who thought I'd side them all out. The Negator draws a Force of Will. He retaliates with a Juggernaut, tapping out - my chance is now. Spiritmonger, ho! Two is definitely the right number of Mongers. The Boa continues toppling this foe, while Spiritmonger stays back on defense, as I am facing some hidden creature (damn those Masks) for which he paid four mana. I don't think he realizes that he can mask his creature's true casting cost by overpaying, but I am not going to take that chance when I'm winning the third and final game. For the indignity of relegating my Monger to blocking, I Will back a Hymn for his lone card (Su-Chi), Edict for his Juggernaut (I guess he likes his unrevealed creature), and a Powder Keg for good measure. With him at eight life, and my Keg holding at one counter, he plays a Dreadnought via Mask. When I see him cast two Impulses on his main phase, I know he's getting desperate. The Boa has left him at a precarious life total, and he's mana burning off his Sol Ring to dig another four cards. Losing a turn of Boa attacks (mana burn dropped him from seven to six) is never a good thing.

Eventually the Boa goes all the way. Ten hits, baby. I never even attacked with the Spiritmonger. I ended the game with Hymn and Duress in hand.

I was keeping Monger back in case of the dreaded double-Dreadnought play. I don't think Porc realized that he could disguise the true mana cost of his plays, but I wasn't throwing away the match on a suspicion. In hindsight, I should have attacked - the Monger would regenerate from anything he could throw at it, and I could Keg for one in response to an attack.
