The spirit of WhiteTrash enters me...

All your posts are belong to us!

I'm back...

Charleston had it's monthly type one event even though regionals was going on.  First prize was an unlimited Mox Pearl.

Turn out was low, but the competition was high.  All the scrubs and type 2 players were off at regionals.  Only chucktown's cream of the crop was there (plus Homer).  Only 12 people showed up... but true to their word the mox was still up for grabs.  4 rounds of swiss, cut to top 4.

I was talking with Darren aka "Pants Keeper", and he asked if I had ever considered using burning wish in my deck.  I thought about it, and it made total sense!  So righ there before the tourney started I took out 4 chain lightnings and put in 4 burning wishes.  Then I threw in a bunch of janky sourceries that I thought I might need and decided to spend 10 bucks to test it out in real life.

Goblins Go Boom! (Wishing Goblins)

4 Goblin Goon
4 Goblin Piledriver
4 Mogg Flunkies
4 Goblin Vandal
4 Goblin Welder
4 Goblin Lackey
4 Mogg Fanatic
4 Mishra's Factory

4 Lightning Bolt
4 Barbarian Ring
4 Burning Wish

4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Wooded Foothills
8 Mountains

SB

4 Bloodmoon
1 Pulverize
1 Anarchy
1 Goblin Grenade
1 Chain Lightning
1 Relentless Assault
1 Kaervek's Torch
1 Pyroclasm
1 Arc Lightning
1 Browbeat
1 Wheel of Fortune
1 Breath of Darigaaz

Janky random cards to test...

ROUND 1...

FIGHT!!!

I get paired first with Shaun Moreland, the master of R/G beats.  We shuffle up and I win the toss.

Game 1

I drop out a first turn fanatic, done go.  Fantic will slow down his initial growth, the firebolt on a stick will just wait to go two for one.
I say done, go!

He draws and drops a PLAINS?!?!  Oh crap...
"Shaun are you playing parfait?"
"I'm not, not playing Parfait..."
I shift into quick beatdown mode and get out a vandal and welder to keep his scroll rask off the ground.  Then I draw into a burning wish.  What the hell?  I want a threat, I want another goblin to pound him with.  I almost wish for a wheel or browbeat, then he drops out humility.  I activate my brain and remember, anarchy is in my sideboard...   Burning wish for anarchy, swing for the kill...

Win

Game 2

He boards in a lot of cards...  He drops out CopRED, moat, humility.  I wait patiently.  I wish for anarchy and smash through!  I have him down to 2 life.  He argivian finds the moat.  This is when I realized that I should run 2 copies of anarchy in the sideboard since I cannot anarchy again. That's Ok I think, All I have to do is top deck into a burn spell.  The he gets out the Cop Red.  That's ok, all I have to do is top deck in a barbarian ring.  He top decks into an Ivory tower.  That's ok all I have to do is hit the ring before it becomes active.  The towe becomes active... I scoop!

Loose...

Game 3

I pound, and pound and pound.  I get out goon, driver, and flunkies.  He drops the stops...  I Anarchy...  He gets out the cop red again.  I am sitting on a burning wish in hand, WTF, I cannot anarchy again.    But...  Wish for Relentless Assault!  I pound through, her cops the big boys.  I cast relentless assault and they pound through all over again!

Win

Shaun is a great player and always a threat.  He is actually a very good Parfait player despite being an aggro player at heart.  I think his deep knowledge of aggro will help him become a very good control player if he decides to stay with Parfait.  Personally I think he will come back to the dark side and play R/G beats again.

ROUND 2

FIGHT!!!

I get paired with my heterolifemate Cullen Cox playing Keepr.

Game 1

I smash through him like a freight train through a card board box.

Win

I hit the board and take out the wishes to grab the 4 bloodmoons. This is the mistake that would cost me...

Game 2

He drops out an early moat... I could wish for a... damn, no I can't.

Loose

Game 3

I again decide that the bloodmoon will be better than the wishes and I decide to try to get it out early.  Of course Cullen gets out an early aura fracture this time.  I pound through and it gets really close.  He top decks into the other white source he needs and otu comes the moat...

Loose

Oh well, If I have to loose to someone, it might as well be Cullen.

ROUND 3

SMASH!!!

I get paired with John Spires the Stacks master.  He runs r/u chronotog version of his own design.  That is the tog to fear!  I am the only deck that he really has a problem with.  Maindeck I have a slight advantage on him.  He runs chills in the board for little old me...

Game 1

Vandals and Welder hit the board.  I take out his welders.  He drops out artifacts out the ass!  I wish and grab pulverize!  I whipe the board and pound through.

Win

Game 2

He gets out Karn, the uber blocker.  I get the wish, pulverize.  And I swing through, vandals and welder on my side keep everything down.

Win

I hope no one else realizes the horror of chronatog stax.  I have been trying to get him to run Fire/Ice in the board or the main as removal for weenies.  With a little more tweaking the deck will be even more brutal (that's right Spires...BRUTAL).  John you should post your build here so people can see it. Share the tech.

ROUND 4

Turtles Fight With Honor!

Another John, I get paired with John O Connell running fully powered GAT.  I have no board against GAT because it requires too many slots and few people run it since Stax decks eat up GAT.

Game 1

I go suicide goblins on him.  I dump all of my bolts and rings and fanatics on his dryads and togs.  Fanatic takes care of the dryad and I keep the tog small by dumping burn into it to force him to try to keep it out.  Pieldriver and goon for the win.  The game actually went on pretty long.

Win

Game 2

Same as first game.  I get out the drivers and goon.  We keep trading critters.  I keep his graveyard low and his hand low.  The game goes on forever.  They call time...  We now have 5 turns to go then it will be a draw.  I tell John to hold on a sec before we do anything.  Since there are only 12 people here we are basically the top 8.  Winner will go on to the top 4.  But a tie will not be enough.  A draw means that neither of us will go on.  I consider being a dick and trying to draw out this game 5 more turns.  In which case I would have a win since I had won first game.  He has pretty much stabilized, we both have critters out.  I could always chump block it out with mishra's and such.  I don't think he can kill me in time.
I don't want to go out like that.  John is really cool guy and terrific to play against.  I decide that instead of being a dick and risking getting us both screwed out of the finals, I scoop.  Then I tell him to shuffle up for game 3.

Game 3

We draw 7 cards and I scoop to his first land... hehehe now he has the solid win.  At least one of us will go on.

John would actually go on the make 1st Place and win the Mox Pearl.  Now he owes me...

Props to everyone for showing up to such a small tourney, 12 people is a bad joke...

Slops to no one, it was great.

Homer gets props for being the only scrub there.  And if he continues getting better at his current rate, by the year 2084 he will be able to make top eight in a field of 9 players....

Burning wish was the tech....

Great Job with the win.

On the Stax deck, isn't Time Vault better than Chronatog? They both do the same thing, but Vault can also be cast off Workshop, and functions nicely with Metalworker and Goblin Welder.

In my own opinion, my Stax deck (the one mentioned in the above post) needs Chronatog more than Time Vault. Yes, the Vault interacts well with Workshop and Welder, but if I don't have Karn, Time Vault can't block. I do have a need to block occasionally in my environment.  I'm not quite finished with my version, as I'm still tweaking total numbers of certain cards in the deck, and still have 2 slots that are pretty much undecided.( I've changed them many times in the last 3 weeks and I'm still not satisfied with what I've got.) When I've got it fully perfected, I'll post it. All I'll say right now is that except for decks with maindeck vandals I'm winning around 90% of my games, pre- or post-sideboard.(This is in testing vs Keeper, GAT, Nether Void, Goblin Sligh, Standard Sligh, Parfait, Enchantress, Trix,  TNT, and random stuff)

Just for the record this is the deck that was posted in December on a number of sites. I still like it but we eventually removed the blue and added Vaults ( those that think this is a 'win more' card should think again) for the Togs. Still, it was a very strong build. We played it in three tournaments and our record was excellent. Sligh was our worst match up - yes worse than TnT. We needed Mirror Universe to beat it (better than Gnomes).  Your friend should definately run a few Fire/Ice. They are tech.
