Author Topic: T1 in Ontario, July (Lotus, AR, Cash.. )  (Read 3318 times)

I'm thinking of organizing a large T1 tournament in Ontario, and the intent is to draw a crowd from all the cities that have pockets of T1 players in them. I know Sarnia has a T1 community, as do the Kitchener/Waterloo/London areas. The tournament would have to be held in Mississauga, as it provides a middle ground for players coming from the East/West.

I'd like to hear from the Quebec/US players. Would anyone out there be interested in making the trip?

Hear is what I am thinking:

Either July 5th, 12th, or 19th (depending on what is going to be convenient for the majority, I'm going to hold a poll)

Sanctioned, $10 entry fee for pre-registered players, $20 at the door
Unl. Black Lotus for 1st, or cash
Unl. Ancestral for 2nd, or cash
Smaller prizes for 3rd-8th
Smaller prizes for 8th-16th

I'd like to hear some thoughts from the T1 communities out there.

if you want to get a bigger croud, make it non-sanctioned and proxy rule

I enjoyed the 77 man turnout at the TMD invitational which was partly the result of proxies being allowed.  Although, since I went to the trouble to own power, I dislike proxies myself.  It's your call Rich, sanctioned is cool, but so is having a larger pool of players resulting from allowing up to say four proxies.

I'd like to keep this tournament sanctioned. The reason is because I want to make sure the integrity of the event is preserved, for obvious reasons. Judging by the opinions at other larger tournaments, it seems to be a 50/50 split between people who want the events to be santioned/proxied.

I'd like to get a large crowd together for this event, but I don't see how allowing proxies to be used contributes to the recognition of competitive T1 play. I'd rather have a registered judge and tournament results recognized by the DCI. That's just my opinion though, and I'll gladly make it a proxied tournament if the majority would rather have it that way.

I'd like to get a good idea of the numbers interested in playing, and then discuss whether or not proxies should be allowed.

I'd prefer to see some sort of proxy rule because I think it would help with attendance.  What do we care about the DCI for?  It doesn't have to be sanctioned to have good rules enforcement, all that takes is competent judges.  I think a good attendance will attract as much, or more, positive attention for Type 1 as an official seal of approval.

Either way I'll be there as long as the location isn't too far away (Miss is good) and family commitments don't come up.

I will be there providing I am not out of town on business. I vote for a sanctioned event (I only own 1 of the P9 but I would rather have a sanctioned DCI event even if it limits my deck options).

Would this be at Untouchables? If it is, I can go for sure since I just have to walk across the street.

I might consider holding it at Untouchables, but this doesn't seem to be generating much interest. I'm gathering e-mail addresses from T1 players from the events that I attend, but I doubt anything will come of it. If I can't get 30 people, I definitely won't do it.

Even though I prefer type 1.5, I would be happy to come play in a sanctioned type 1 event.  Even though I am very low powered, I can't stand proxies.

I live in Newmarket and have considered coming to other events in Mississauga so I have no problem with the location.

Well, I assume you are talking about the same place that I am.

The scrubbiest thing about it is the store. It has the most wacked banned/restricted list I have ever seen. They seem to ban cards at random. They sometimes run "type 1" but allow no power 9, have totally horrible random formats every week (like "tribal", yet don't ban cards like Tsabo's Decree), and they don't award the full prize amount, forcing you to spend your measly winnings on overpriced crap rares in their showcase.

However, I do get a lot of good trading done there.

I would really love to take charge of their "tournaments", make them type 1.5, award the full prize (the entrance fees) and giving prizes for more than just first place.

Any other locations around Toronto/Markham/Mississauga/Newmarket (hell, even Barrie) that have a consistant source of reasonably competetive MTG?

Just wanted to point out that there is a fairly large event planned in Toronto on July 12th so that would not be the best day.

On another note, they plan on setting up more events and they are encouraging people to email them the format that they would like to play. Maybe we could convince them to run a Type 1/1.5 event sometime soon. So send them an email!
