What cards are likely to see play?  Which cards will affect Type One?

One card I overlooked should probaby be restricted:

Portal offers what?

3 Sorcery Speed Tutors and Jungle Lions? I assume Zodiac Dragon will have some errata so it functions like squee.

If thats all, I think that the decent tutors will be restricted and will see minimal play, Zodiac Dragon might see some play , and the rest of the sets will be forgotten. There aren't even any set mechanics in portal waiting to be broken, so it seems like the effect would be negligible.

Zodiac Dragon W/o errata, though, would be amazing. It even reanimates for FAT BEATS.

They've already answered the ZD question: it would not function like Squee. Its ability would only trigger when it leaves play. They said this is some Magic Arcana (I think during dragon week, or some such).

I do not ph34r Horsemanship.

Bring on the tutors. If combo is broken, we can have an explosion of critical mass debates! Huzzah! Seriously, I don't think this clearly second-rate tutoring is the most dangerous addition to combo, else we'd all care a lot more about Tainted Pact than we do now. Mana is the brokest part, and I don't know of any crazy Rituals in the Portal expansions.

I dunno, imagine Mask where Spoils always costs 2 life. And that's probably the most benign use of unrestricted Vamp.

Yes, but it will also cost 2 life, a card, and a turn. Spoils is instant speed and card neutral. Thats a huge deal for control, thats a whole extra turn to find wish/plow/counter.

It's not a big deal for necro, though.

It's not a big deal if you've already got 2 naughts in play either, that's not the point.

There's two obvious restriction targets, one other possibly usable tutor and a really nice beater for 9 land stompy (whee). Beyond that, the block doesn't offer too much.

Some people are saying the tutors aren't good enough because they're sorcery speed, which just seems naieve to me. With 5 vampirics and 5 mysticals in a deck tendrils would probably have something like 70% first turn kill.

Excuse my ignorance, but are the Portal sets becomming legal? If so, in which formats and is it true for all Portal sets or only some of them?

We speak in hypotheticals, but with any luck they'll all be Vintage legal soon.

And I know the tutors are probably restriction material; I'm just saying I don't think they'll break the game wide open.

Just to clear up the Zodiac dragon:
Quote
When played under non-Portal rules, the text should be read as "When ~this~ goes to a graveyard from play, you may return ~this~ to its owner's hand." [D'Angelo 2000/06/05]

And I predict some deck somewhere would try to use Rolling Earthquake http://sales.starcitygames.com/customer/product.php?productid=16229&cat=&page=1 as some sort of mass removal if aggro decks become more abundant.

[Sarcasm]I really think that Portal will be good for Vintage.  What we really need right now are a set of more Tutors.  Even if they are restricted it will still be okay.  They will help us search for pump knights in our Necro decks and the like.  Just what the format needs [/Sarcasm]

Seriously, how many times do we need to talk about redundancy "eliminating" the restricted aspect of restricted cards.  I don't think we need more tutors.  Jungle Lion looks cool, but that is about it.  The set is either boring to slightly worse copies of cards we don't need more of.
