Home-School Expulsion takes 12th place out of 28 players.

N00b quote of the day:
“Is Counterspell legal?”

Overview:
5-proxy Type 1 tournament, $15 entry fee, first prize beat UL Twister, second $75 store credit, 3rd $25 credit.  Game Universe.  Standard rules, Swiss, etc.

Mostly good decks, as in fully powered Tier 1 or  2 decks.  There were a couple Hulks, a couple Slavers, a couple Madnesses, a Stasis, a few random crap decks, Mask-Nought, TnT, White Weenie, LandStill/Fish, StaxNought (wtf?), Aluren, Dragon, and a few more.  Pretty varied, and definitely competitive.  I was expecting a lot more scrub decks, but I guess the $15 fee kept them away.

I was running my pet deck, Home-School Expulsion.

4 Brainstorm
3 Impulse

3 Mana Drain
3 Swords to Plowshares
2 Vindicate
2 Disenchant
3 Hymn to Tourach
2 Stifle
4 Duress

1 Mystical Tutor
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Time Walk
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Yawgmoth's Will

3 Shadowmage Infiltrator
2 Exalted Angel

4 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Jet
2 Polluted Delta
2 Flooded Strand
4 Tundra
4 Scrubland
4 Underground Sea

SB:  3 Contagion
SB:  4 Blue Elemental Blast
SB:  3 Chains of Mephistopheles
SB:  3 Serenity
SB:  2 Stifle

Match 1: Nick, with Elves.

Game 1: He goes “Forest, Defiant Elf,” and I crack up.  After several minutes of explanation, we continue. At least he didn’t drop a Crazed Goblin or Reanimate a Trained Orgg.  He’s playing some random elf deck, and it’s pretty bad.  Defiant isn’t half-bad with Timberwatch Elves, but Timberwatch gets Plowed and Exalted takes it all the way.  He does get me down to 3 with Kaysa pumping all his dudes, but I bust out YawgWin and Walk into victory.  Exalted is insane in this, keeping my life at a fairly steady level.

Game 2: I side out Disenchants and a Waste and put in Contagions.  He gets Wellwisher set up, and manages to get me down to 12 and himself up to 37 before Contagion takes his guys out.  Another Contagion (hardcast) later clears out two more elves, Hymn knocks out his 2 Kaysas while he’s stuck at 4 mana, and 2 Shadowmages take it all the way.  Exalted finishes it up.

He seemed pretty cool, and was surprised that I wasn’t running any “real lands,” i.e. basics.  He did get somewhat irritated at my penchant to play so much at end of turn, since in the second game I pulled pretty much all my Brainstorms and Impulses.

Match 2-0
Tourney 1-0

Things are starting off pretty well, though I know that most of the decks are serious.

Match 2: Manuel, with Hulk

Game 1: We go slowly.  I almost make it, getting him down to 9 via Shadowmages, tons of manaburn from Drains, and fetch/FoW damage.  I Disenchant his Deed, which he blows in response to clear my Moxen.  He eventually busts out two Togs, both foil, and it’s over.  A little bit of simple arithmetic and we head for game 2.

Game 2: I side in Contagions (over Vindicates) and Chains.  This is an extremely close game.  We go back and forth with Strips for a while, but both of us draw tons of lands.  He ends up with maybe 5 cards left in his library, but his giant graveyard kills me.  I plow his tog, and he counters it.  I topdeck another plowshares, he counters it, then I Demonic for a third one and resolve it.  Another tog at the last minute finishes it.  Chains NEVER FUCKING SHOWED UP until the end, after he had drawn 12 cards off a single AK, by playing it, YawgWilling it, then Cunning Wishing for it.

Match 0-2
Tourney 1-1

Ouch.  Well, not too bad, at least, and my brother is 4-0 with MaskNought.

Match 3: Rob, with Slaver (mostly artifacts, no counters)

Game 1: I get THE SETUP.  He gets screwed, and I destroy every damn permanent he plays.  Literally.  I even Disenchanted a Mox somewhere in there.  Stifling his first-turn Delta helps tremendously.  Highlight was me Draining a Mox, just so he wouldn’t have anything.  Exalted takes him from 18 to 0 with a quickness.  He ends the game with a Sapphire in play.

Game 2: I SB in the Serenities, but it doesn’t matter, as I fuck up and tap out.  Big mistake, as he proceeds to topdeck a Slaver, and gets it going.  I then proceed to plow my Morphed Exalted and Waste my own land.  Trading one card for 4 is some good, and I proceed to lose.  Two Welders plus a Slaver is not good.

Game 3: We stall out.  The usual things happen, what with discard, LD, etc. His Triskelion takes me to 13, but I kill it.  Time is called, and we can’t finish in the 5 turns.

This could have gone either way, but I’m not used to playing Slaver, and it shows.

Match 1-1-1
Tourney 1-1-1

Match 4: Ryan, with Control Slaver, in toploaders

Game 1: I mulligan to 5.  Yeah, double-mulligan.  He keeps a bad hand, though, and I rip him up.  He FoWs an SMI, but I take him down with a really fast Exalted.  This was totally one-sided, though.

Game 2: I side in Serenities, and he sides in Blood Moon, which always wrecks my deck.  He eventually gets the setup and kills me.  Blood Moon hits, then Smemnarch shows up and starts stealing my lands, which give him more mana to steal more lands.  Highlight was his response to my playing a Mox Pearl, which was something like “Thirst for Knowledge, Thirst, Brainstorm, Force of Will.”  His two Gilded Lotuses negated the Blood Moon quite nicely for him.

Game 3: Similar to game 1, but without the mulligans.  He can’t get much on the board, and I get close, but time is called.  I totally would have won, but whatever.  He had nothing and no hope, but it would’ve taken quite a few more turns.

Ryan’s a nice guy, and his deck, which was all in toploaders, was damn good.  Most likely a card-for-card copy of whatever Smennen’s running.

Match 1-1-1
Tourney 1-1-2

Match 5: Brian, with Aluren

Game 1: I have no idea whatsoever what he’s playing for most of the game.  I Drain some stuff, then YawgWill like a madman.  A fast Shadowmage draws me a bunch of cards, and Exalted seals it.

Game 2: I try, but I didn’t really expect him to go so nuts so fast.  Aluren, Cavern Harpy, Brain Freeze, game.

Game 3: Shadowmage smacks him around for a while, and another joins and starts drawing me 2 extra cards a turn.  He goes off, and I Stifle the Brain Freeze.  The 3 cards I get milled for contain YawgWill, but it doesn’t matter.  Exalted kills.

Brian was a cool guy, and his deck was pretty nice, but I just kept Draining his Lim-dul’s Vaults.

Match 2-1
Tourney 2-1-2

The only part of this most people will bother reading:

Props to all the cool people, the people who enjoyed playing and didn’t mind playing with those evil WHITE-BORDERED cards, or against someone with WB duals.  Oh, the horror!  Props also to the brokenness inherent in Type 1, and to Defiant Elf, and a legal Counterspell.  Extra-special props to the crimped foil Wasteland I picked up.

Slops to Wizards for all the ridiculous crap they print, and slops to Slaver, Intuition, Welder, and Shop, for being irritating as hell.  Slops to all the net-decks out there, and slops to the “TMD Effect” that makes everyone copy whatever’s dominant.  Slops also to the lack of Keeper.  Why?

Possible future deck changes:
-2x Disenchant, +1x Mana Drain and 1x Exalted Angel
Disenchant wasn’t doing much for me, and Drain and Exalted were, and would be better as 4-3 than 3-2.

-3x Hymn to Tourach, +3x Sinkhole
Eh, Hymn isn’t pulling its weight, and going all-out on Sinks would be cool.  Of course, I could also do this:

-3x Hymn to Tourach MD, -2x Stifle SB, +2x Stifle MD, +2x Disenchant SB, +1x (insert good card here) MD.  Maybe Vamp Tutor again.

Mods:
-2x SB Stifle

+2x  MD Stifle

-2x MD Disenchant
+2x SB Disenchant (temporary)

-3x MD Hymn to Tourach
+1x MD Vindicate
+1x MD Exalted Angel
+1x MD Mana Drain

-1x MD Scrubland
+1x MD Island

I lol'ed at this.  Very Happy

A quick comment on your deck. I'm very unfamiliar with OSE, but it looks very similar to EBA, except with cooler cards like Shadowmage. But why aren't you running a full arsenal of Forces and Drains? Not enough U cards?

Other than that, Shadowmages4Life. Smile

Hey Gunslinga

I think I was playing next to yours during round 4. Nice to see you bring such a rogue deck to an event. I can't seem to remember you for the life of me though.

It is a shame I seem to suck with non-TnT Workshop decks thought. See you next time when I'll try to bring my 'A' game.

I was sporting the Punisher shirt and sideburns. I ran white weenie to 4 and 1. Unfortunately due to no top 8 (noobs voted for a top 4????) I hit 5th with a goofy tie breaker and the shop owner could only offer 8 dollars worth of card protectors for a 5 dollar bill in sympathy. DAMN!

Nice to meet you Gunslinga. Sorry I couldn't trade Matt those Force Of Will's, opened them in packs after winning a box of Alliances back in the day. They have a special place in my heart. Next to my wonderful pregnant wife who dropped off the cell and offered to get me food.

my Game one: JAMES, I got owned by Survival of the Fittest, Squee. I hit 2 Survivals with Disenchants but they just kept coming. Then the Worldgorger Dragon combo-option the deck hold hit me game two.
Match: 0-1

my Game two: BRIAN, Running Alluren-Cavern Harpy-Brain Freeze combo. I never saw the combo go off in both games. Wasteing several lands away and Proxy Savannah Lion beatdown (only own 1 LION, sad I know)
Match: 1-1

my Game three: LEE, good Slaver match. Welding my 2 Phrexian Warbeasts and Razor Golem for 10 turns was a hoot. Lose a land, lose a life and summoning sickness for one creature but I won that race. Funny as hell. Sideboarding Dust to Dust, Null Rod, Tormod's Crypt.
Played all three games. down to the wire. At one point I Wasted, Disenchanted, Swords to Plow Shared and Dust to Dusted your whole front away. That was cool.
Match: 2-1

my Game four: Llyod, Hulk. Beatdown for a while and then togged out. Sided in 2 Exile, 3 Tormod's Crypt. I stared down Tog's through most of the matches. Plowed a few. Game three was tight as Soltari Priest went all the way despite an attempt to kill it with Pernicious Deed that I prompty Disenchanted.
Match: 3-1

my Game five: RYAN, another Slaver with fat protectors making the 60 cards near a foot high. Much like my last slaver match. It took all three games. Dust to Dust was golden that match too! Icatian Javelineer pecked off a welder or two and I played a ton of removal.
Match: 4-1

no cut at 4-1?????
Anyway, I had a blast and played against some good players!

Anyway here is the deck:
WHITE
4 Icatian Javelineer (W, 1/1 one time Pinger)
4 Savannah Lions
4 White Knight
2 Soltari Priest (WW, 2/1 Shadow, protection from red)

4 Disenchant
4 Swords to Plowshares
1 Land Tax
3 Tithe

1 Enlightened Tutor

ARTIFACT
1 Mox Pearl
1 Black Lotus
4 Phrexian Warbeast
3 Razor Golem (6, 3/4 Affinity for Plains, does not tap to attack)
3 Cursed Scroll

LAND
16 Plains
1 Stripmine
4 Wasteland

SB
3 Abeyance
3 Dust to Dust (1WW, Sorcery, Remove 2 artifacts from the game,)
2 Exile (remove non-white attacking creature from the game, gain life = to it's power)
2 Null Rod
3 Tormod's Crypt
2 COP Red

Congrats on your finish gunslinga.  By the way, I was the one who traded you an Oath for some random sideboard junk.  I played Drya-Hate.dec which is like 3-color Hulk with out the togs.  Here was my decklist for reference

4 Quirion Dryad

4 Force of Will
3 Daze-This was horrible all day.  I'd change them to Mana Drains if I had them but they should probably be an additional Stifle and 2 Cunning Wishes
2 Stifle
2 Misdirection

3 Damping Matrix-Simply amazing all the time.  Even allowed me to stall out games against Hulk long enough to find a dryad
4 Fire/Ice
1 Time Walk

1 Fastbond
1 Gush
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Fact or Fiction
1 Merchant Scroll
2 Future Sight
4 Accumulated Knowledge
4 Brainstorm

4 Wooded Foothills
4 Tropical Island
3 Volcanic Island
5 Island
1 Forest
1 Strip Mine
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Ruby

There are a few changes I would make to the deck after playing it at the tourny.  First I'd cut the dazes for the 2 Wishes and a Stifle, then I'd ad the 4th Volcanic Island in exchange for a Misdirection as they weren't all that useful and I'd cut Fastbond for a Regrowth for now.

@swawagon, about those forces, about 10 seconds after I got home I ebayed for a playset and won so its no big deal.

I was also seriously expecting a more 'scrubish" type metagame but was surpised at how many powered or semi powered decks showed up.  I hope to see al of you at the next tournament next month for a Ruby.
