Huh. An Italian tournament with less than a bajillion players. Is there a war no one told me about?

Got any idea if the prize for this was a Lotus, Wompy? 44 is soooo close...

For people too lazy to analyze the entire decklists:

1. DARgon
2. Keeper
3. Stax (no Trinisphere)
4. RG Beatz
5. DARgon
6. Star-Spangled Slaughter
7. BUGR Hulk Smash
8. Sligh

Caller is insanely old tech.

This is horrible.  I bet the budget forums are about to go ape shit.  I don't want to insult that many people, but honestly...  Who let unpowered dragon take it home?

I'm just going to consider this a mana disruption Dragon variant which abuses ESG to replace the utility of Moxen. Actually, it's pretty creative. Pursuing the same Null Rod strategy it's possible to say he's only missing Black Lotus and Mox Jet, which isn't that bad; he is packing the requisite 4x Bazaar. Give the guy a little credit?

I'll give him credit, clearly he's got something going on.  But the rest of those players...

Budget is a horribly flawed concept.  How can you construct an optimal list when you don't allow yourself to play with good cards?

There seems to be something I'm missing. Scrivener can only return FoW, Ancestral Recall, Stifle, Intuition, Vampiric Tutor, or Crop Rotation to your hand in this build. Wouldn't that just be much better if there was a Cunning Wish or two in the deck so you could return that to your hand, and then Wish for a kill mechanism like Stroke of Genius or something else?

I think my favorite deck in this Top 8 is definitely the Sligh deck which placed 8th. 4 main deck Null Rods is tight.

Even the Scrivener-Wish-idea, like Caller, is not a new one. Most people might have missed it, but Siral postet a report playing a deck using that kill here.
That said, I really like Scrivener + Cunning Wish for the kill, as it finally alllows to ignore hate like Blessing or Ankh (using Necromancy) again.
The Cunning Wishes in the t8 deck here seem missing, but even though the deck already has 60 cards, looking at the sb i guess they just were missed during registration/typing of the t8 lists.

I think it is a safe assumption that the RG beats plays 2 Cursed Scroll in stead of Scroll Rack.

The tourney wasn't "5 Proxy" because we use to sanction any event all around the Italy. So "sometimes" ( statistically speaking ... ) subotimal or semipowered decks and/or players can Top8 at one event. That Genoa's Event has almost "no pro t1 players" because of some other events in Italy.

I think that the "Scrivener-Tech" is one of the good things that Siral thought some months ago. Common Dragon Hate ( StP, Matrix, Blessing ) are no more a problem because of it. It is another way to go home with Dragon against Control decks. I played agaisnt Siral a lot of time and this card let him win a lot of unwinnable games ( Keeper vs Dragon )

I look at the breakdown and I noticed the lack of a lot of good players and I, on my own, recognized how strange is the Genoa's Metagame...
I'm sure that Dario the Palma went unpowered to this tourney because of the possibility to take double Price ( IMHO, Unpowered Dragon is the only one unpowered deck that can win an huge tourney ), and he achieve this goal ( he own the entire beta power of course.. Wink).

If you look at te top8, only the Zoo player should have not be there because of his deck, but even him, played a well metagamed and well balanced pile of Control and Combo Hate ( Waste, Shamans, Pillars, Boas ) with an appropriate Sideboard.

Talking about the lack of 3Sphere in Workshop.dec, I can say to you all that the common argument used here ( not a so good argument IMHO .. Sad ) consist on saying that " 3Sphere is a lot better in Monobrown rather than in Lock&Stock.dec, so it can be taken out, having room for "6 months ago" older cards... I can't convince anyone of them to put in 4 CotV and 4 3Sphere.. WTF!! Sad

So if you exclude it and the Metagamed "Miss America".. the top8 consist of 2 Dragon, 1 Hulk and 1 Keeper and 1 HateSligh and 1 Stax. Not so different from a lot of the other top8s all around the world... Smile

And it was a Not5Proxy Tourney and a little event compared to the usual Weekly ones

I received the report of the 1° Placed
I hope you would have a good reading

Dario "Lydonius" De Palma wrote:

".....Hi, i'm writing this report to celebrate a 'Historical Day' for the Italian
Type One Circuit : an Unpowered deck wins the 1st Tourney organized in Genoa by 'The Abyss League' !!
More than this, 3 decks in the top 8 were Unpowered, this can be also due to a field where the Workshop decks were pratically absent (only 1 on 44 players ).
Now we go to the action: as always when a tourney is hold in Genoa, I can sleep more than usual and take my time to get ready. After  the last changes to my list I met Mario at the Dante's Square.
Deck that on the testing online performed pretty well, is a Black/Green
build set with anti control/anti combo cards maindeck.

This is the list i played

NAME:The Million Bears
        4 Worldgorger Dragon
        1 Caller of the Claw
        1 Ambassador Laquatus
        4 Squee, Goblin Nabob
        3 Null Rod
        3 Xantid Swarm
        2 Dance of the Dead
        3 Animate Dead
        3 Necromancy
        1 Entomb
        4 Duress
        1 Crop Rotation
        4 Elvish Spirit Guide
        1 Demonic Tutor
        1 Vampiric Tutor
        3 Wasteland
        1 Sol Ring
        1 Lotus Petal
        1 Mana Crypt
        1 Strip Mine
        5 Swamp
        4 Bayou
        4 Polluted Delta
        4 Bazaar of Baghdad

We arrive in Genoa after a smooth trip where i roll some 'Numbers for the
Road :)as Neil Young sings' ...while trying to set-up Mario's deck (a UR
standstill ) removing some questionable card choice and we enter the Shop where the Tourney is hold.
There we met some of the usual players from Genoa -weird
eh?,Torino,Savona,Massa& other 4 ppl from Imperia (My Town) when entry close
we are 44 for a 6 round swiss + top8

Round 1 : Riccardo Rosa - Suicide Unpowered

Game 1- He wins the dice roll and start with the usual Suicide slow start : Swamp /
Duress , my hand is not particularly exciting and he discards an Animate
Dead, on my turn i do the same and i see an hand of 2Negators Spectre swamp
+ Edict that i discard , he plays swamp#2 go, i play Bazaar he plays
Sinkhole on my Bazaar that i activate discarding useless cards + ESG, he
plays petal Negator i play swamp petal he attacks and i play Necromancy as instant on my Faerie blocking the beast and taking 3 from trample, he makes a poor choice saccing the Negator and a swamp this way getting screwed on mana because he doesn't draw a land for a couple turns that are enough for me to set the combo and win soon after.
Game 2 - I look at my cards and my hearts stop beating for few seconds : i have the turn 1 win hand if he don't play Duress.... he keeps his hand too and goes Swamp.... Ritual /Negator!!! YAY!! i play Bazaar petal mana crypt activate Bazaar discard  Dragon and Animate the 2nd best fatty ever printed  Very Happy:D

1-0-0 (2-0)

Round 2 : Enrico Bernabč - Hulk Smash fully Powered

Game 1&2 - He is an old friend but unfortunately for him my deck is set to beat control and he cannot counter all the treats i play , wastelands helps too and when i get him low on cards i can Get Off easily in few turns both games, sry for the lack of details but were really fast games ( i just remember a Drain + FoW on a Xantid played then animated )

2-0-0 (4-0)

Round 3 : Alessandro Fugallo - Rector/Tendrils fully Powered

Game 1 - His deck too suffers alot the hate i pack maindeck :Wastelands, Null Rods + Xantids buy me the time i need to Get Off  also if on game 2 i have to dig deeply in my deck to see an Animate Spell

3-0-0 (6-0)

Round 4 : Daniele Vernetti - RG Zoo Unpowered

In this match my deck decides to take a nap and also if i Draw pretty nice
hands both games i can't get a creature on grave fast enuff and i die to his swarm of angry critters

3-1-0 (6-2)

Round 5 : Daniele Gualco - Sligh Unpowered

He tells me that it's his 1st T1 Tourney and his deck is pretty standard :
on game 1 i Get Off  3rd turn after being hit by few Burn Spells and
Critters , on game 2 he sees enuff  Wastes to slow me and wins, on game 3 my deck wants to show him his full power and i Get Off  turn 2...
After the match he tells me that he has no Tormod's Crypt on side because he chosed to run Bottle Gnomes instead...  ;P
I tell him that probably at least one 4-2-0 could make top 8
(will i have a future as Wizard? he will be the one who Top8 with a 4-2-0
score....)

4-1-0 (8-3)

Round 6 : Eugenio Mosca - Benga's Factory Fully Powered

How Lucky.. i'm the one at 12 points paired down and we can't draw in so we
shuffle and play winning 1 game each, on the 3rd after 4/5 turns of skirmish
where wastelands on each side shorten our resources, i manage to play a
Double Animate dead thanks to the almighty ESG, he FoW the 1st but the
second resolves giving me the game and match ;D;D

5-1-0 (10-4)

I'm the 1st of the swiss rounds cuz the others all drew-in and i am really
happy when i see that i'm paired with the Guy with the Sligh Deck (the one without Tormod's on side) ;D;D , in fact also if he manages to win game 2 thanks to a well timed topdecked wasteland i roll over him in few turns on the other 2 games.
In the semis i'm paired against the RG Zoo that beat me on round 4 while on the other semifinal there is Danilo Benvenuti playing Keeper facing the only Workshop Deck of the tournament, seeing that and being Danilo a friend of mine and his opponent a friend of my opponent, i offer the split of prizes to my opponent ( a Mint Unlimited Mox Jet and a Foil Intuition ), he agrees and we start playing : the games are not much fair for my opponent, proly because my deck wants to demonstrate that amongst the unpowered decks He is the best and i win game 1 turn 2 also if he wasted my Bazaar, creating a million Bear tokens tx to Caller of the Claw ( at this time i do a little show writing on a paper the words 1 Million Bears 2/2 putting it on the board and pass looking at his River Boa and Lavamancers that feels not so good staring at the avalanche of damages that face them Smile
Game 2 he starts strong with Tormod's x 2 but i'm not so unhappy cuz my hand is : Swamp Null Rod Demonic Wasteland ESG & 2 Bazaars.
I go Swamp Duress seeing 3 Critters and 1 Incinerate + Wasteland & Fetchland i waste his land, play Rod with ESG and pass, he plays fetch #2 getting a forest , but i topdeck my Strip MIne tx to Bazaar destroy his land ( a crucial play cuz he topdecks Ground Seal soon after but has no mana to play it and i Get Off  next turn !! i'm on final !!
Danilo has won his match and because he was on debt with me for a concession in final on a previous Tourney, drops after we decide to split the Mox

In the end we sell both prizes and we get good money  ;D

Props: to Mario & the other ppl from Imperia
to all my opponents that showed a fair play also when the games
were not so fair for them
to www.TheAbyss.biz & www.Magic-League.com if un have time take a look there, u won't regret
            to ESG a card that's Bar0ken Razz

Slops:  to the one who steal a backpack of a friend that was
cheering me while i was playing the top8, i hope   that your
belly will be filled of worms and you  get a sexual
disease
to Silvio Berlusconi that is and will be the real pain in the ass for the whole Italy if we'll not do something to stop it. Smile

That's all Folks!
