I'm one of the few poor souls who try to play serious type 1 in Maine, and it's getting harder and harder. Most people play at local card stores, which seem to have a 95%+ focus on type 2 (i.e. FNM, etc.), making it hard for type 1 players to get a game in edgewise. The only type 1 events in my area (Bangor) are either a). lame and scrub-laden or b). held by me. Very few people have the good type 1 cards necessary to build real decks, so we generally resort to the unlimited proxy format (not that there's anything wrong with that).
In the past few months, I've held two Mox tourneys, with attendance of 25 and 20 people. Now admittedly, this isn't that bad for a mox. But, now I'm trying to give away a Black Lotus from my own personal collection, and a 20- or 25-person turnout won't cut it. I have decided to move the tourney down south (two hours south) to Scarborough, which is just inside the state. I am hoping that a bunch of TMD people from NH, MA, CT and other states which are close will show up to support the Maine type 1 scene at this tourney. I want to get a turnout of at least 50 people, which I hope the lotus will draw (did I mention that it's a MINTY FRESH lotus?)--this will be the largest type 1 tourney in Maine in a long time (or maybe ever). I know there are a LOT of type 1 players who could get to Scarborough by a 2 to 4 hour drive, which I don't consider too bad because from Bangor, Boston is 4 hours and most of the real tourneys I have been to have been at least that far away.
Well, I hope some of you will answer this request for support and will show up at this tourney to show some of the locals what real type 1 actually is. If you need more information, here are some of the basics (this tourney has been announced in the tourney forum but I think the support has been lukewarm so far):
The Place: Choose Your Own Adventure Games, 152 US Route 1, Scarborough, Maine
The Time: Saturday, July 10th, 2004. Deck registration begins at 11am, tourney starts at noon.
The Format: Unlimited proxy type 1—Normal banned and restricted rules apply. The number of rounds of Swiss will be determined by the number of entrants, followed by top 8.
The Prizes: If 40 or more people show up, first prize will be a NM Unlimited Black Lotus (retail value $1000+).
If fewer than 40 people attend, first prize will be based on the number of entrants. Random door prizes will be given each round, as well as additional prizes such as fewest proxies and most original deck design. Second and third place prizes will be determined by the number of entrants.
The Cost: The entry fee will be $25. Just because AndyStok can give away 2 lotuses for $15 entry fee doesn't mean I can--I'm not as much of a money-making machine as he is, so just accept that $25 for a mint lotus isn't bad.
