Wow.

2nd through eight place will get 36 booster packs, but 2nd through 8th place at the SCG tournament will get a piece of power.

Boosters are really worthless.

576 boosters * $3.69  "=" $2125.44

202 players * $10.50 = $2121.00

It's like they are printing money...oh wait, they have been doing that for years.

[EDIT: I think it is standard procedure to give boosters from the most recent block as prizes. Which set would be the best choice for us Type 1 players?]

At least first place still gets something decent.  That's ridiculous though.  What a terrible prize structure for something marketed as a world championship.

Maybe they'll be like Italian Legends boosters or something.

If that were the case, you would think it would indicate as much.

While this prize does suck compared to the SCG prize structure, people through 32 place do get packs.

So, let's bitch about it.

MaRo's email is on the wizards boards.  There are plenty of other people to contact that leave their emails on articles and elsewhere.  Instead of whining and complaining on a board where people aren't going to notice, send them reasons to notice.

Steve brought up a good point, they can't expect the format to grow and develop with such shitty support.

My email is going out tonight.  I suggest the rest of you do the same, if you'd like to make this year's gencon a little better for all of us.

That's not the correct address--you can't reach mtg.com writers through email anymore, since it got so clogged with spam.

You have to actually go to his column, and click on the little "respond to mark rosewater via email" link at the bottom. Tedious, but it means you're 100% guaranteed to have him read it.

Also, consider emailing the gencon coordinators and people who are more than just a figurehead.

Actually AFAIK that email address is never read. You have to submit emails through the links at the end of his articles as an anti-spam measure.

He has articles of answering his mail bag at that address.  I actually think they both go to the same place, but the link will dodge the spam filter if you're sending from hotmail.

Send from both if you're concerned.  The more emails, the more Mark will feel our discontent.

Quote from: Dr. Sylvan
Mr. Rosewater,

I just heard about the GenCon Type One Championships' prize structure (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=events/magic/T1champs). As I understand it Wizards of the Coast appoints the Tournament Organizer for this event, and thus has strong influence over the prize payout. Type One players, looking for someone to contact, felt you would be able to put our concerns in the right peoples' attention.

Each Top 8 finisher getting what amounts to ~$80 (plus the first place artwork), while certainly not trivial, strikes me as rather uninspiring for a tournament which will near-certainly exceed 200 players. With just twice the entry fee and a lower expected turnout, the next Waterbury (CT) will be having a half-dozen Power Nine and two Mana Drains among the spoils (depending on the feedback the TO gets about entry fees). I have no idea whether WotC subsidizes the T1 Champs prizes, but assuredly a dozen booster boxes does not make the tournament very glamorous compared to that 100% independently-run tournament.

Whatever you can do to make this event as exciting as possible would be very much appreciated.

Sincerely,
Philip Stanton

boasnapes caught us all being dumb:  it is confirmed that the prizes are in fact italian legends, and not some crappy new set.  Check the basic user forum for the other version of this thread with the link.
