Edit: I actually meant to post this in the Open Type 1 Forum. Posted here by habit. If a mod wants this in Open Type 1, then by all means move it. Until then, let NEWBIES get the new tech!
At Eudominia, there were exactly 8 players in an unlimited proxy non-sanctioned tourney. TheLegendOfMagic was there to take home the gold ($20 store credit) and the 1st place prize dual land. Congrats to LegendOfMagic and his big dudes.
I played my own SlapJack build, the Auriok Salvagers/Lotus/LED/Spellbomb deck, with Trinket backup beatdown. Same build as posted in the Newbie Forum (check out all the good stuff there for lists, etc.)
Round 1: Jasper with U/G Madness
Game 1: Jasper is already familiar with my deck, as he saw the various threads on Salvager decks, so he is unsuprised when I combo off turn 3 or so with Force of Will backup. I win. Game 2: Jasper is now even more familiar with my deck, as he just faced the shear ferocity of ComboControl, but this time he seems a little more suprised that I combo off quickly, ignoring all the Wurms and Moembas flying around. Maybe I let him make me draw 3 with my Misdirection. It went pretty quick. My deck must love me.
Game 3-8: We play for fun, since there is plenty of time, and it's his first chance to play against SlapJack: LotusHead's Salvager Deck. He loses games 3-8. He is pretty sure he is playing his deck correctly, but SlapJack just keeps comboing off. Game 9: Null Rod resolves. He beats me.
U/G Madness players, here's a tip: When playing against Salvager Combo decks, mulligan down to 3 if that means you get your Null Rod.
Jasper was a great sport and didn't criticize my Glasses of Urza SideBoard Tech.
Round 2: Ryan playing Draw 7
Game 1: I go first, play land, Brainstorm into Force Force Land, put land and another land back ontop of my library, and put the two Forces next to my Ertai's Meddling, Cunning Wish and Trinket Mage. I play a Mox. Go.
Ryan goes broken. Then I Force his Twister. He tries to Yawg with plenty of mana. I force. He dies to Triket beatdown and his own Mana Vault up his hiney. Wasn't pretty.
Game 2: I start with a land and a Stifle, so that's good enough for me. He goes broken, eventually does Diminishes into a promising hand (mine had win conditions, but no Forces.). He does a few more tricks and peters out. I may have Ertai'd his Dark Ritual at some point. He dies to either Trinket Beatdown or good ol' fashion Combos. I think it was beatdown.
He was a good sport and only lost game one because 2 Force + 2 blue cards is better than his God hand.
Round 3: TheLegendOfMagic with 7/10.
I have been wanting to face him since last Thursday, as I want to know what my deck is capable of. If I win, I win a dual land to give to a friend who plays Slivers, plus $20 store credit and more credibility as a Type 1 player/innovator. If I lose...then I'll be back until I win!
Game 1: We fight counter wars. He wins and drops Sundering Titan. I lose shortly afterwards.
Game 2: I side in Stifle for Titan and Engergy Flux because I had Kaia Foglio sign it for me a long time ago.
He plays lots of stuff, and I play lots of stuff. When my Vampiric Tutor resolves, I figure it is safe to go off (and cast Auriok Salvagers). I was right. I combo and win. At one point he REB'd my Energy Flux. Damn.
Game 3: I side out Flux and put in Blue Blast, hoping to force through a key spell. Game 3 was long and drawn out. He took Trinket beatdown for a while, burned himself to get a few permanents in play (Workshops/Guilded Lotus). We fight a counter war over his Welder. He wins. I think I Twist for some reason.
Later, he has Chalice for 0 and then Chalice for 4!!!. I wait for a key card to make everything all better (Mox Monkey, Sol Ring/Trinket Mage/Explosives), but they don't come. He casts Tinker, and I Force it and Misdirect his response. As the Tinker is slowly fading from the stack, he lets me know he is still doing stuff in response, weighing his options carefully. Then he plays Thirst, then Brainstorm then another Brainstorm and eventually REB's my last counter on the stack. Sundering Titan hits the board and I am left with no land, maybe a Spellbomb/Sphere, 3 Moxes and a Lotus in hand. Titan stomps on me for the win with Welders swinging too! I die two turns later.
TheLegendOfMagic will probably have his own report and may more accurately reflect exactly what went on. (I forgot to take notes durning that match).
Congratulations TheLegendOfMagic!
I knew (from Apprentice and/or theory) that Sundering Titans are BAD NEWS for my deck. I was not aware of just how much Control/counters 7/10 had. His sideboard outclassed me. (Stupid REBs)
Till next time, keep on Salvaging.
Postscript: Did I see a team ShortBus Salvager deck placing at the SCG Power 9 Tourney?
