List of playable type-1 cards - great for deckbuilders

I am posting here a list of the best cards in type-1. I have seen many times people wondering what would best fit in their decks. This list of cards has been invaluable to me for finding new ideas or just making quick changes to my decks. Most cards are blaringly obvious, but the big thing is that they are all grouped by categories, making deckbuilding much more easier. You will notice that all categories are divided in 'power level' sections.

The lower 'power level' sections are marked with both - and *.

The 'power level' sections marked with * are a 'brainstorm' list of cards that could possibly see play. Generally you won't use cards that are in *s, but sometimes they open up new ideas.

Also, sometimes there are cards that may seem out-of-place, like chain of vapor in 'mana accelerants' section. The cards out-of-place are always to be considered in proper context (in the case of chain of vapor, bounce back your moxes and replay them).

Agreed, but I try to avoid putting cards that are only playable in a single archetype. I try and make a list of cards thats more generic, more cards you're likely to consider to put in most decks. If you plan to do a battle of wits deck, you don't need to see it on the list to figure out you should play 4x. Likewise, I cannot see someone hybridising a non-battle of wits deck with a battle of wits derivative. Therefore, it didn't make the cut.

On a sidenote, I could understand someone considering putting a darksteel forge in a sidebord. I also do agree that the card is pretty bad.

Yes I am well aware of it. I have never said the cards with - or * signs were unplayable, I just said that the cards ALONE are not as good as cards listed in the upper tiers. My list is not based on decklists, it is based on the cards which I found are worthy of being listed

BTW, I changed a few cards around. I will agree that ornithopter could be moved a bit higher. Now cards were added/removed tho.

I fail to see how many of these cards constitute the "best" of type 1:
"lake of the dead, humility, cataclysm, solitary confinement, karma, viashino heretic, stormbind, fires of yavimaya, razorfin hunter & ancient den".
These aren't even good in the lesser formats.

I understand that your list may have utility value, but your intro doesn't seem entirely appropriate.

Besides, why not just take a gander at Doc Sylvan's breakdowns?

Viashino Heretic is awesome in current Type1.  Such a powerhouse against Workshop based decks.  Razorfin Hunter is also a strong card in the Fish Mirror.  Humility itself is hotness, but the problem is that White can't support it enough to make it see use.

I included lots of cards which arent really hot, but those cards are almost always in the lower sub-sections. All the good cards ARE listed, and since I want the list to be generally an all-around list of almost every card I could think of (that are playable), it also includes less playable cards. If you want to 'cut the crap' and get the best of the crop, then ignore/remove the cards beginning with a - and those with a *.

The list you gave

is really a poor example.

-lake of the dead    -       is listed in '-'
-all white cards and gold cards are ranked (high) in their sections simply because there isn't much playable cards in white/gold. So in comparison to the other cards of the same category, they are 'good'.
-Ancient den is unplayable. So is plains. They are simply there for completion's sake.
-viashino heretic is a great card. its a great companion with gorilla shaman.
-razorfin hunter is good in fish.

If you only want the best cards, just check the top most cards of each sections.

My mistake.  I meant to use only non -/* cards... otherwise I would've listed a heap of cards.

And the point is that you listed unplayable cards in the non -/* sections, citing them as the best of Type 1.

yes. you are right. I really should have said the best of each color, because the ratings -/* are applied comparatively to the other cards in the same category. I have never thought of making the list where cards are more based on their overall power amd impact they have. I will perhaps make/change the list that way. However I would just mention that I feel the white section will get agnostic really fast

I have a similar list of actual cards in boxes.

Whenever I purchase new cards, packs, or after a draft, or what not, I take all cards that could theoretically be played in a constructed format, (including 5color, block, standard, extended, vintage etc) and put up to 4 of any card into a sleeve.  Henceforth, I have playsets of most constructed star cards.  They are sorted by color, and by color into alphabetical order.  It makes deckbuilding so fast.  I don't have to scrable to find the cards.  Whenever I am done with a deck, I desleeve it and put the cards back.

This is offtopic I know, but serious constructed players will take heed of this list and perhaps into their playboxes.

yes xzero thats exactly how I proceed myself. However I keep a sleeve on every card all the time, wether they're in the box/deck or not. Even the really cheap sleeves (the ones at 1$/100) have proven their worth: All my old cards I bought back in 1995 (I can still remember buying ice age/4th/alliances boosters ) are still in NM condition. I used to keep every card I had into theses boxes all sorted by color and in alphabetical order, but theses days I just trade off everything thats not competitive enough and leave the space for the better cards.

Otherwise, I think it would be easier to basically sort cards by color/alphabetical order and then use this list (this thread) and remove within the list the cards you don't have. That would avoid a lot of typing and save some time not having to type everything back.
