Inspired Researcher
1U
Creature - Wizard
1/1
Whenever an opponent plays a spell, you may look at the top X cards of your library and put them back in any order. X is the converted mana cost of that spell.

Originally this was based on an idea I had for the Attendant Spirit thread; it ended up being completely different, so I decided it belonged on its own.

I think this would be a really cool little creature - nerve-wracking for your opponent to try to play around, but not overpowered.

This takes all the good bits from Attendant Spirit and leaves out the bad bits. I like this card a lot.

This is one of those cards that just doesn't feel right to me. I'd love to see playtesting results for this card, since that ability just seems extremely powerful to me. It's not Scry, by any means, but I still think it would allow for a ridiculous increase in card quality for such a minimal investment.

Did you know that Red is the color or art and music and passion? Combine that with Green, the color of nature, spiritualism, and community and you get a hippie commune of drum circles, dreamcatchers, and recreational drug use. Let's see that win a Pro Tour.

Ever played with Sylvan Library? Unless you have a shuffling effect those bad cards have to be drawn sooner or later. Current cards (Sage Owl) give you a 1/1 Flier and immediate stacking of the top 4 cards or the opportunity to draw a card (Neurok Familiar). Clearly these cards are much better initially.
So how good does the ability have to be to overtake the mighty Sage Owl in quality. Well the first spell cast by an opponent might get you up to the Sage Owl in terms of searching but probably not so we need 2 spells from an opponent to make up for the fact that you likely to have to wait for the effect. Note that if an opponent casts several spells, the effect is not cumulative, it only gets better when you draw some cards or shuffle. Throw in a further spell to compensate for the lack of Flying and the current card becomes better than Sage Owl after your opponent has cast 4 spells (assuming the Researcher lives to see all of those spells).

Don't get me wrong, this is potentially a very good card but when you have to look to see if Sage Owl is stronger, you probably don't need to fear it being ridiculously powerful!

Um, yeah. I guess I agree with that. This is definitely more playable than my Attendant Spirit (and also definitely less weird, but hey, aren't my cards always? ;-) I like this just the way it is. Good work.

Also, the flavor text is amusing, and approriate on two levels (since it refers to both the mechanic of the card as the fact that it was inspired by my original idea). Teamwork4L!
