So eugene gives out a mox for $15 and this guy gives out a berserk for $10? How many people are you expecting? In anycase, I'll be there, and as usual, I'll savagely pwn anyone who's in my way.

Well it is going to be Beta....

I suppose we're expecting at least 15-20 people at the Bill's place.  The more the merrier, as Bill will have bigger prizes in the Future if we make this work.

As much as I hate when people give out tiny prize support, the best way to convine a TO to have a regular t1 tournament with hot prizes is to support the hell out of him from the get-go.

I'm located nowhere near this thing, but I recommend people show this guy he can give out a mox every month with their attendance.

Crying or Very sad   Sorry to disappoint you with the smallish prize support Kowal.  The owner is just super-nervous about losing money on power.  I think however that a successful tournament this time will mean powerful prizes in the future.

While I can see him being reluctant to put up power, I think it's a mistake on his part.

I mean, seriously, no disrespect to any other store, but ALOT of "smaller tourneys" have taken place here, and they've all failed. As far as I know, Eugene and MHC are the only stores still holding BIG tourneys. I'd MUCH rather pay 20-30 bucks to play for power than 10 bucks to play for a beta berserk. I think a lot of people are in the same shoe and the owner would get MUCH more support if he put up something big for 1st. Plus, you do have to realize that a bunch of the type 1 players are somewhat far from this place (we all tend to live near lakewood) and as such, are more reluctant to make a long drive just to play for a berserk.

My suggestion? If the owner doesn't want to lose out on money, but doesn't want to give out power, just do a cash tourney like MHC. you figure 100 bucks to first and 20 store credit to 2nd. That way he's still making a profit and getting his name out. Eugene went out on a limb on the first power tourney, but I'm sure EVERY type 1 player in CO knows his store and will be planning on going to his next tourney.

If you can't say something nice....

Bill WILL do power tournaments.  I convinced him to do this one to start out with because he was afraid of low turnout.  Prove his theory wrong, and He will reciprocate with big prizes.

Besides, most players don't own demi-power, let alone real power.  If you note, the majority of people playing at Eugene's were playing Maximum Proxies.  I know that a Beta 'Zerk probably ain't all that big a deal to you, but the most expensive cards I personally own are Nether Void and an UL Berserk.  Any tournament like this is an opportunity to enhance my collection and work up to power.  This is the same attitude that I've heard from a lot of budget players.

Oh, and Castle rock is not anywhere near as far as Longmont.  It takes 1/2 hour to drive from Golden to Get to the Rock on a Saturday.  Just take C470 -> I-25 or Santa Fe and Head South.

I wasn't trying to sound like a jackass, I was just pointing out the fact that it's kinda annoying that he's charging so much for a beta zerk. Most people I talk to from valhalla's aren't even willing to drive half an hour to play for a mox. I will most likely make it simply because I don't have a job and have nothing to do most saturdays.

I appreciate his effort in trying to start up power tourneys, but if he wants mad support, he might not want to charge so much for such little prize support, ESPECIALLY if he wants to compete with Raven's Roost and Stonebridge games (which will proably be holding monthly power tourneys). If he plans on holding regular LOCAL tourneys, then I'll shut the f*ck up. But if he wants to get huge support and start power tourneys (meaning attracting people from other counties), he needs to have better prize support. I'm more than willing to hook him up with close friends of mine to get power for cheap, but expecting a huge crowd when your charging $10 for a beta zerk is unrealistic.

I don't understand where the proxy issue came up, but I was all for unlimited proxies. Yes I do own power. But I did win a bunch of them way back and just like everyone else, I did have to trade a buttload of T2 crap for some of them. If you want to upgrade your collection, why settle for a beta berserk when you could get a piece of power?

Again, I mean no disrespect to Bill, I'm just saying that he shouldn't be disappointed if he doesn't get the support he expects. Like I said before, I will show up and hopefully bring along 3-4 peeps so in the future he can have a better prize support.

Having a job, being married and small children, I tend to stay pretty busy. If I make one tourney a month I'm doing well, It's usually more like one every two or three. If this was for a Piece of Power or even a Bazaar I'd be there for sure, but as is I have 2 Beta Berserks. I may make it but can't commit. If Eugeen is gonna do a Power tourney in Nov. I'm going there vs. this. No disrespect.
I do hope the turn out is great and that he'll start doing bigger tournies in the future.

Thank you Bob.  Very Happy   If this is successful (which by all accounts it appears that it will be) you can expect mad power tournaments to get run here in Castle Rock as well as Eugene's in Longmont.  Won't that be nice?

@"where did the issue of proxies come from?":

You were making a deal out of the fact that it wasn't too exciting for you to play for only a beta Zerk and that's fine because it represents a tiny amount of value to you.  If only the rest of the magic community had the luxury of turning their nose up at a $90 card.  I mean, let's face it.  Money is money, right?  A beta zerk will increase the value of some players collections by a large percentage should they win, so the value is in the eye of the beholder.  I happen to find T2 to be pretty sucky at the moment so the opportunity to play in any meaningful vintage tournament seems attractive to me.

@ Green Knight:  No disrespect has been taken.  I understand the demands of having a Wife and Kids (I have 2.... Kids that is) and I'm doing the best I can to get this thing off the ground, so If you have to prioritize I totally sympathize.  I had a helluva time getting this thing off the ground and I sure don't see anybody else out there taking the lead on trying to improve things around here.  I have been beating the bushes for weeks now trying to shake more coconuts out of the tree.  I've even got Carl VanLaethem from BlackGold to tenatively commit to a power tournament if we want.  So, if we want to get some respect nationally we need to show support for the owners who are sticking their necks out there and risking losses for the sake of our hobby.  If it turns out to be Viable Bill will gladly hook us up with the really good cards.  Let's not forget that Eugene took a bath on that last tournament at Stonebridge games because people didn't represent AND several high profile vintage tournies lately have bombed out spectacularly, losing literally thousands of dollars on prizes for the TOs.  We have little to do with those, but word gets around.

In my opinion Bill seriously underestimated the effect of advertising on this site and the following that Vintage has around town.  He floated the number to me of expecting 12-15 players and based entry fee and prize support on that number.  If we flood his store with 25-30 people he will no doubt increase the prize payout to the winner and top 8 that day and future tournaments will have FANTASTIC support.  Bill is just a guy that believes in the things that he can see.  If he sees us turn out in force he will help us out.  If the turnout numbers are right the winner will probably be able to draft CoK forever in addition to getting the Zerk.

Okay for the sake of building a stronger Type One community I have decided I will definitely be at this event along with a few others from Raven’s Roost (which btw has been running weekly Type One Tourneys on Wednesdays). With any luck we’ll have a good turn out, how are things looking on this Shawn?

Oops, sorry that it took so long for me to respond to this.  I'm a bad TO....  From what I can see there is going to be a fairly decent turnout.  If you're going to bring like 3-4 people I can pretty faithfully report that there will be around 18 people.  Perhaps more.  If that many people show up Bill will have no problem throwing these events for power in the future.  Good Job Denver!!  Also, if that many people show his prize support will no doubt go up pretty dramatically.  I imagine that at the minimum the T4 will get a scad of packs in addition to the Zerk and a couple of Duals I imagine.
