Since Kowal was a walking Zombie, I took top 8 notes.  I could only cover one match this round, so it was Smmemen vs Clarence.

To set some background, Steve has been VERY animated all day and in some cases has over-thought some things – at various times Kevin Cron has to get up and leave the play area because “it’s a standard Tendrils win Steve!â€?  Clarence is clearly excited to be in the Top 8 and is not looking forward to playing Stephen (a bunch of us give him pointers beforehand such as “name Doomsday with Meddling Mageâ€? and other brilliant advice).

Game 1, Smemmen wins the die roll.  His opening hand is quite strong:

Lotus
Mox Sapphire
2 Fetchlands
Island
Necro
Vamp Tutor

Clarence doesn’t know it, but he needs FoW.  Instead, he gets:

Strip Mine
Null Rod
Fetchland
Cloud of Faeries
Faerie Conclave
Standstill
Spiketail Hatchling

Surprisingly, he keeps it (I would have mulliganed it personally), but Doomsday isn’t THAT fast of a combo….

Steve drops Fetch -> swamp, sapphire, pop Lotus for BBB-> Necro.

Steve thinks….steve ponders aloud how many cards he should Necro for (typically with Deathlong he would go to 9 life).  Eventually, he Vamps to put Time Walk on top (17 life) and Necro’s for 11 cards (down to 6 life).  The cards he removes from the game by discarding are Island, 2 Fetch, Duress, lotus petal, and another Duress.  He passes the turn.

The best banter from Clarence to the crowd is:

Clarence: It’s very good!  Turn 1!  Necro…broken….ugh….that makes me cry!
Crowd: Mox Pearl makes it easier though

(for those that don’t get it, 8th place gets last choice, probably Mox Pearl)

Clarence draws StP, strips Steve’s land and passes.

Turn 2 - Steve drops Mox Jet, Island, Timewalk.  He then Necros for 4 (down to 2) and brainstorms EOT.  At this point Clarence comments “I have no permanents!â€?

Turn 2a – Steve’s Timewalk turn involves Island, Dark Ritual, Dark Ritual, mystical for Yag Will, drop Chromatic sphere, activate it (drawing Yag Will), play yag will, replay 2 x Dark ritual, lotus, a few other spells and Tendrils.

Clarence sideboards in 1 null rod and 2 disenchants for 1 voidmage and 2 StP.  Steve brings in 2 Back to Basics and 3 Old Man of the Sea.

The opening hands were 1 Standstill, Ancestral Recall, 2 Fetchland, Nullrod, 2 Spiketail Hatchling for Clarence and 3 Land, Dark Ritual, Vamp, LED, Doomsday, and Brainstorm for Stephen.

Clarence opens with land, go and appeals to Smemmen’s liberal side – “Concede to the minority?â€?  Smemmen declines the affirmative action and Clarence passes the turn.  Steve lays a basic island and Brainstorms.  Clarence fetches and Ancestral’s himself in response, drawing Curiosity, Mishra’s Factory, and Standstill.  Steve draws 2 land and another Brainstorm off his original Brainstorm, puts two cards back [I don’t see what] and lays LED.

On Turn 2, Clarence lays Cloud of Faeries, untaps, and plays Null Rod (not realizing the LED is just a ploy).  Steve looks at me and smiles [I saw both players sideboarding] and chimes in with “Oh, I have a different combo post board versus Fishâ€? [referring to BtB and Old Man].  On Steve’s turn, he fetches a basic swamp and brainstorms again draing Unmask, FoW, and Mind’s Desire, putting back Doomsday and some other card.  He Unmasks (pitching Dark Ritual) forcing Clarence to discard Curiosity.  Then he Vamps for Old Man of the Sea.

Clarence draws Mox Sapphire, which now doesn’t work because of his Null Rod.  He plays Standstill, which Smemmen Forces.  On his turn, Steve lays a land and casts Old Man of the Sea.  At this point it doesn’t look good for Clarence since Steve topdecks another Old Man, but Clarence has the Force.  The following turn Steve Demonic Tutors for his 3rd Old Man and it’s too much for Clarence.

Final parting quote - “Looks like a bunch of dirty old men jumped the little gay men

I give clarence a TON of credit though.  I was talking with his team and him prior to the top 8 and it seams they are normally standard draft players.   Clarence was more than happy to take the pearl.

You guys gotta remember for someone who doesn't play vintage, to play Smemmen was a HUGE honor to the kid.  I mean come on, we never play any "internet celebrities" around here, and for a kid that played what i assume to be his first vintage tournament, he was most likely more overwhelmed by the fact that it was Stephen Menendian than anything.  it also seemed to me through talking with his team that they didn't playtest against Doomsday.  Idk

hopefully they will travel the hour from Madison to milwaukee to play with the crew here.   I loved talking to Clarence and his team, they were defnintly the nicest group of kid's. (kowal, Klown of Tresserhorn, Dianic,  and the meandeck guys i met were all top notch also)

hey Hi-Val if you read this, you should definitely put up those pictures of the Titans you did for myself and my boy tommy!!!

Don't get me wrong, I thought everyone on that team was incredibly cool and great fun to hang out with...and did especially well for their first Vintage tournament.  I was just trying to point out several things in the coverage - 1. all the funny quotes and 2. that clarence did seem overwhelmed by Steve, that's all...

You guys hit the nail right on the head, lol!  I know everyone on our team feels that it was a gigantic honor to meet such a great crowd of Vintage players.  We're all new to the format, and I was apprehensive about fitting in with everyone... but we were accepted with open arms and smiles.  You guys all have more graciousness and enthusiasm than any other Magic players I've ever met!

Clarence made everyone on our team amazingly proud with how well he did.  We were joking about not being able to gaze upon the godliness that is Smemmen and all the elite Vintage players.  Getting to watch Clarence T8 and play his match against Smemmen was incredible.  Even though Smemmen beat Clarence, everyone on our team felt like we had gotten to play him too, and that we had actually won or something.  Talk about living vicariously through other people. Wink

Our testing was indeed a bit flawed, being mostly against Mono U, Long Death, and the mirror match (that was awful, lol).  We tried to get a little bit of everything, but that doesn't always work. ^_^'

Everyone here is really looking forward to future events in Wisconsin and the midwest... a couple of us have been cooking up plans for going to tournies in Milwaukee and getting to know the crowd up there.  I'm so happy to know the Vintage format flourishes so close to my home!

Thanks for all the support and friendliness from everyone, and a big hug for Clarence for piloting Phish to the T8.

You guys did awesome.  You should be very proud.  I hope you guys keep at it.

I will remember Clarence as the first magic player I've ever seen to play magic on his knees becuase there was no chair at his table.
