Third Time Lucky
{2}{U}
Instant

If this is the third spell played this turn, draw three cards.

***

I wanted to play around with the name "Third Time Lucky", so I created a spell that revolves around threes - in fact, it has three threes. It has a converted mana cost of three, must be the third spell played this turn, and draws three cards. I figured that the neat flavour of the card and the kind-of restriction would make it feasible to cost this less than Concentrate and to make it an instant.

There's lots of room for flavour text, so I'll be taking submissions and looking for appropriate quotes/excerpts online.

Did you know that Red is the color or art and music and passion? Combine that with Green, the color of nature, spiritualism, and community and you get a hippie commune of drum circles, dreamcatchers, and recreational drug use. Let's see that win a Pro Tour.

Type One can handle good card draw, though. Thirst didn't break the format, and I don't see this doing it either.

I like this a lot, but maybe it should give you just one card if it wasn't the third spell played, instead of doing nothing. Sort of like a threshold for spells.

Draw a card. If Third Time Lucky is the third spell played this turn, instead draw 3 cards.

I'd rather not tack on extraneous text, if possible. I want to maintain the "feng shui" of the card, as it were. It might be better if it drew one card, when not played third, but it is pretty good as it is, and it has that nice balance of three threes. Throwing a one into the mix would ruin the card's perfect harmony.

Hunting grounds was a threshold card that did nothing except when it you had threshold, so I don't see why this can't. This could even be a cycle! With varying numbers of spells needed to be played in order to trigger the ability.

Flavour text:

"Good luck always came in threes for glok, he had three piggies, three wives, three limbs...."

I like this one a lot, and I would be surprised if it was broken in T1. This thing would be a real pain for a control deck to cast, given that tapping out in the main phase is a Bad Thing, and relying on your opponent to make your draw engine good is not ideal either (see: Landstill). You *could* put it in combo, but then you have Meditate which is strictly better in almost any combo deck you care to name. I think this could draw a card if it's not spell #3 and still not run any risks with the power level.

Do you have any specific objection to it? I actually built the card around the name, so I'd like to keep it that way, if possible.

It's just kind of weird. If it were a common phrase, that might be okay, but I've never heard this before.

You've never heard it before? Crazy. From my perspective, it's as common a variant of the idea as "Third time's a charm." or "Good luck comes in threes."

"Third time's a charm" is the only one I've ever heard. Where are you from?

Same. Anyone else want to back up Ephraim here? If it's a regional thing, then I think it'd be okay as a name.

Not that MTV News is the most reliable source or anything, but here's a link to them using the phrase in a headline.

It's also the title of an old movie.

From The Idiom Connection:
Quote
third time lucky

- the third time that you try something you will be successful
He was third time lucky when applying for the job at the film production company and he finally was successful in getting the job.

I have heard it, it is common in England. I believe you Yanks even allow three slugs with those strange bats in your rather inferior version of cricket.
