[ Aside:
Hello, my name is Aaron Kerzner, and you may remeber me from tymes of olde. I posted on this site before I took a "break", but breaks are for losers, and loser I am not.  Consequently, I figure I'd rile up some good discussion in the ole "no-newbs" forum. ]

In the current metagame, which I will not even attempt to define, what are general cards you are going to want in your sideboards? It could be easier to compile a small list divided into subsections, such as "Graveyard Hate, Workshop Hate, etc", with the actual cards listed within the sections. I can start off with a few examples with short reasonings.

*Also, assume these are normal sidboard without any type of Wish maindeck.

Workshop Hate - this is obviously manditory to appear in all sideboards. It is nearly impossible to go through a tournament without facing some spawn of the MWS deck, whether it by Stax, 5/3, or a Hybrid. If your deck doesn't have an overwhelming time against these, you will probably need some help games 2 and 3.

Great hate cards continue to be the classics, mainly Rack and Ruin. In addition, Energy Flux can be useful in some control sideboards. What other cards are widely used and needed in the sideboard against MWS menaces?

What other categories of SB cards are needed in today's metagame? Why?

Having played Stax a lot recently, I can say with some certainty that Energy Flux is a really horrible hate card.  Giving your opponent options makes it way too easy for them to make the right choices and end up violating you.

Take away the options.  Even crappier cards that trade one for one like Oxidize are scarier than Flux.  Rack and Ruin is probably the best thing we have.  Learn it, hold it, love it.  Maindeck it.

Gotta agree on the rack and ruin thing. 3 mana, so you laugh at trini, instant speed for all those important moments in life (eot/upkeep), and its a 2-1.

Combo is what I tend to put the most thought into for my SB. Most other problems are classicly delt with maindeck. No one bats an eye at STP or Anul (well, not really), but it would it would seem really out of place to have a maindeck Sphere of Resistance or Arcane Lab. There are tons of answers to combo, availible to basicly every deck out there. I think if we wanted to, it would certainly be possible to hate it out.

Just off the top of my head, these are the cards that I have sided in vs combo in some recent decks

Everyone has:

Chalice, tormods crypt, and Sphere of Resistance

Blue decks can throw in tinker->plat, arcane lab, stifle, FORCE OF WILL

Red decks have pyrostatic pillar, bloodmoon

Green - rootmaze

White - orims chant

black - discard

WS - Trini

//

In general, my SB tends to be able to deal with the following

Artifact Hate
Combo Hate
Welder Hate

and then meta-wise

GY removal
Enchantment hate
and control hate

You know what card is NOT a good sideboard card?  Hanna's Custody, because now you can't kill Slaver's Platinum Angel.
