When brainstorming ideas for decks, I like to run searches on card databases to find cards that might be useful.  In addition to using the search tools of computer-resident programs like MWS, I often use online card search functions because a) it's more convenient or b) the computer I'm using doesn't have any Magic programs on it.  What websites do you recommend using for these kinds of card searches?  The search capabilities at gatherer.wizards.com seems pretty lousy, and my old standby of the spoiler generator at mtgnews.com hasn't worked for months.

I've found gatherer to be excellent, but www.mtgpics.com also has a good search engine.

The Advanced Search function at SCG seems reasonable. It's as near a replacement to the MTGNews edition as there is, I think.

www.mtgfanatic.com is decent. It's also good for buying random commons, and by supporting them you support the Maine economy, as they are based out of Maine.

I generally use Gatherer when I'm looking for some detailed information, but if I just want to see what a card generally does, I just look at something like SCG.

I will almost always use Gatherer or mtgpics now, but before I found mtgpics and before Gatherer was up, I usually used the one at www.coolstuffinc.com, which wasn't too shabby,.

I prefer using http://magiccards.info/search/

It's pretty powerful.

http://www.essentialmagic.com

and of course

http://www.mtgpics.com

Note that Essential Magic has all cards including Portal and Starter. MTGpics will have Portal very soon. Both have good card images if printing proxies is your thing (although if you have the cards a good colour photocopy makes a better proxy)

If you are looking for useful cards; pictures won't do anything. Therefore; apprentice probably has the best card search (filter) since it's fast, convenient and has the errata of the cards. (if you download the right patch that is)

It does however lack some information you might find useful such as the series it came from and the picture. Although these are not useful in finding interesting cards, they are pretty useful if you just want an awesome card or look at some picture.

Magictraders.com for prizes of course.

I like Gatherer, but it's seemed buggy at times for me and sometimes can't find the card that I'm searching for.

At first I thought it might be because I hadn't set up the search command in Firefox properly, but then I would actually go to Gatherer and search for something like Black Lotus or Arcbound Ravager and it wouldn't always come up.

Essentialmagic.com always seems to take a while to load and gatherer isn't sophisticated enough to perform really complicated name/function searches. My search engine of choice is at http://www.cardkingdom.com

I prefer David's Magic Database, a friend of mine created it. It's easy to use and if you know a bit of sql you can realy do a lot with it.

I use apprentice to find out everything except artowork/artists (obviously) and current wording. I've never seen an apprentice patch get ALL the wordings right. For that I keep a bookmark to the Oracle, which also convienently has a link to Gatherer on the side.

Anycraze.com has a pretty good search engine but ussually they over price their cards so its almost ussless for buying cards (but you can get some good deals on random stuff)
