"You might have not noticed, but this is a free market, and I, personally, don't find your product worth purchasing"
If you don't find it worth purchasing, as many others don't, then why bitch about whether Dr. Sylvan's stuff should be free, you're not going to contribute to his stats, etc.? It costs 8.21 CENTS A DAY. I'm not trying to be a commercial here, but if you really like Type 1 that much, and Magic strategy in general, then I would think it's worth it. That's less than the cost of a newspaper or a soda every 3 days day, for information that is actually pretty good. To be honest, I was appalled at the thought of paying for a SCG account myself, but after seeing everything available on a friend's account, I can honestly say that I feel it's worth it. The content is much more,
and better, than I thought it would be, when I didn't think their content was that great to begin with. They have definitely convinced me that it is worth it, as the flow of information and quality articles seems to be much higher than before.
My biggest worry is that the sample size for Philip's work will be even smaller than it is right now. I would deduce that the information would be further skewed and actually work against the natural evolution of the all-important 'general meta' and reflection of what is actually strong/popular.
If you're biggest worry is that the sample size will shrink, then continue to publish statistics and Top 8's for Minnesota tournaments. As someone else already alluded to in this thread, most TO's publish this information
so people can actually see that Type 1 is being played at a certain store, city, etc. It helps draw interest in the product, which in turn helps draw interest in their store and/or tournaments, which in turn helps draw money to their cash register.
