Euclid's Elements is MY bible!

A few weeks ago I had my Geometry students work with some Fractal generating software in which they input numbers for transformations of rotation, reduction and translation and the applet produces a fractal image.  They have also had fun coloring them in with Microsoft Paint.

As a way to encourage them to make more than the minimum five, I made a little contest and asked the teachers here at school to help and just take a few minutes of their time to look at the images and vote on their favorites.

They are, however, as most teacher are, overburdened with work and as such I got few responses.  As such, I am asking you, my friends of the type 1 community, to add your input, providing me a way to determine the creme of the crop.

If you would be so kind, take some time and look over each image in the school's gallery at http://www.invisiblegold.com/math/20042005thegilbert/

1.) Choose 3 images(not just gallery names or artists).  Rank these as your first, second, and third choice for favorite image.
-Mostly all the images were created with an IFS program.  The exception is the first rows of bioskiash's gallery.  These were created using a program called Fractal Explorer.  These first 4 images are NOT part of the contest.  Additionally, those listed under the gallery MR. R and DRW are those created by myself and the website's owner.  These are also not part of the contest.

2.) Reply here with the 3 choices that you most like.  List the Gallery name AND the particular fractal name.(If you click on the thumbnail image you will see a larger image with the name underneath it).

Thanks in advance for any time you spend enjoying the student's hard work.

One:
http://www.invisiblegold.com/math/20042005thegilbert/5031040013892/zoom.htm?image=palmtree.jpg
I like the cleverness of the illustration.

Two:
http://www.invisiblegold.com/math/20042005thegilbert/5031307416465/zoom.htm?image=fractul1.jpg
I like the colors here, and the fact that the shapes aren't the kind you normally expect from a fractal.

Three:
http://www.invisiblegold.com/math/20042005thegilbert/5030850031252/zoom.htm?image=frac1.jpg
This one edges out the honorable mention purely by virtue of the cool shading.

Honorable mention:

1st Place. bioskiash's #3. Thoroughly psychofunky; excellent. I would check to see if that image isn't some [ctrl]-c/v job. His other work just isn't this sophisticated.

2nd Place. zzsumblime120zz's palmtree. Reminds me of the Buddha's 'Fire Sermon.' A+

3rd Place. soccermom1337's aroundthecorner. First off, wtf is going on here? Do those yellow stars on a blue field represent the oblivion of the void she's facing aroundthecorner? Not bad though. I would deduct a point or two for style by referencing anything '1337.' That just ain't cool any more kids.

Honorable mention. Adam Vaccari's #4 reminds me of my childhood Simon Says; poor criteria for judging student art, but still--I loved that thing.

Thanks so far to all have voted.  I'm gonna give this a few more days to vote and then tally up the votes both here and from my fellow teachers.

If you plan on voting...get your votes in now.

Thanks again,

You know, the hardest thing right now is chosing the order of these three.

1-  tom simmons - 7.gif

2-  squattingdog55 - sunflowerofpride.jpg

3-  kappa21 - 1st.jpg

Tom's has a wonderful shape pretty unique among the standard fractal.
Squattingdog55 used color wonderfully in an elegant design.
Kappa21's was simple and stylish and appealed to me.

I have to say, whichever student is "mr r" should get a swift kick to the balls or something because his work is just complete and utter garbage.  I'd imagine that any misery and pain sent his way has been deserved for a looooong time.

1st:
http://www.invisiblegold.com/math/20042005thegilbert/5031307416465/zoom.htm?image=10.jpg
I really like the use of color here, and the sharp edges.

2nd:
http://www.invisiblegold.com/math/20042005thegilbert/5031307416465/zoom.htm?image=14.jpg
A solid concept, reasonably executed.

3rd:
http://www.invisiblegold.com/math/20042005thegilbert/5031347344197/zoom.htm?image=4thofjulyfractal.jpg
I'm a total sucker for the spraypaint tool.

Hon Mention:
http://www.invisiblegold.com/math/20042005thegilbert/5030931046265/zoom.htm?image=sunshineonacloudyday.jpg
That's one of the few with a decent title, even if it is from a song.

Okay, so my winners are, in order of coolness:

First place:http://www.invisiblegold.com/math/20042005thegilbert/5031359031160/zoom.htm?image=fractal8.jpg
Anyone need a logo for a right wing extremist organisation? J/K, but this looks seriously menacing and ominous. Technological, too. Savage work.

Second place:http://www.invisiblegold.com/math/20042005thegilbert/5030933584378/zoom.htm?image=thing.gif
Shame about the name. 'Thing' is obv. a rather unimaginative name for what could well be a logo for a biotech firm.

Third place:http://www.invisiblegold.com/math/20042005thegilbert/503131546723/zoom.htm?image=1st.jpg
I don't know if 'Uru: Paths of of Shell' means anything to any of you, but this immediately reminded me of that. I am fascinated by the Golden Ratio and spirals. This is a really nice, beautifully simple example.

Some others that I seriously considered and wanted to mention:

http://www.invisiblegold.com/math/20042005thegilbert/5030816077301/zoom.htm?image=middlestar.jpg
Occult symbolism. This wouldn't look half bad in a book on jewish gnosticism.

http://www.invisiblegold.com/math/20042005thegilbert/5030931046265/zoom.htm?image=snowflake.jpg
Because it has a shamanistic quality to it. One would indeed initally associate it with a snowflake, but I see life there. Trees. Growth. Symmetry. The Gaian Supermind.

http://www.invisiblegold.com/math/20042005thegilbert/5030944292498/zoom.htm?image=2.gif
Black holes kick major ass.

http://www.invisiblegold.com/math/20042005thegilbert/503132504536/zoom.htm?image=fractel6.jpg
Quite artistic. I wouldn't mind this being on my wall.

http://www.invisiblegold.com/math/20042005thegilbert/503104458832/zoom.htm?image=star.jpg
If he'd have called it 'anus', he'd have won this thing hands down.
