We pronounce our "r"s in the Midwest in the proper places in words.  caR, not caW.  Idea, not Idear.  Very Happy

Pop, not soda.  I know its already been said but I must put emphasis on this.

I don't know about Indiana so much, but in IL and IA dissing the Cubs is a capital offense.

Midwesterners are nice and talk much slower than New Englanders.  Usually you can ask any random person on the street for directions and they will help.

Moxlotus knows his stuff...and yes...dissing the cubs is a capital offense unless you are south of peoria Illinois then you are a cardinals fan or are from south chicago or are black or hispanic then you are a sox fan (not the red kind you are used to.  They used bleach on theirs to make them white).

Hey, Glad to know that someone else will experience the wonder that is Indiana. I lived in Indiana for about 14 years, and I hated it. They only have 3 things and they are (in no particular order):

Corn
Basketball
Bibles

The people are real friendly, but shallow, they ask how you are, but that is because they were taught to ask in the name of politeness, but they have no interest in the answer of of becoming your friend. They are just going through the motions.

Also, the sheer number of churches in the state scares me. Here in England, you give directions using landmarks such as pubs and restaurants and suchlike, in Indiana, you go left at the Methodist, right at the Baptist and then left again at the Lutheran. And all the car parks are full every Sunday. Yikes.

Also, all my old friends there, (the few I managed to make) all have an unhealthy love of Dubya and his policies. Its a farming state, so very very conservative. Also, the clocks don't change in the fall and spring like in the rest of the world, because the farmers complain that it is too dark on a morning to work. Damn.

As to the Magic scene, I know that in Indianapolis there is a healthy Vintage environment, and if you look on the Wizards website, you can find a list of stores that hold regular tournaments and Indy is only about 45 mins away from ya'll.

Anyway, don't let scare you too much, I have just gotten bitter about the place.

That's a pretty extreme case in my opinion. I live in rural Indiana and I've never seen much of what you are talking about. Granted, there are a lot of church-going people in Indiana but that's just how it is. Farmers don't exactly have a lot of things to have faith in this life because they can't have faith in harvest coming in because it very well may not. A lot of farmers have a "Everybody vs. us attitude". They stick together and help each other out. So, I see no reason why they shouldn't have one thing that they can believe in. I myself don't go to church but I can understand this and it doesn't bother me.

Also, people in Indiana aren't shallow because they say "How's it goin'?". They generally say it because they care and are friendly people. I don't know how many times I've just had pleasant conversations with random people in Wal-Mart or in Jamestown. Yes, some people will greet you just out of customs, but to generalize like that is wrong. It may be that way in you're part of the state, but not were I live. I find the shallow people to be from the cities like Indianapolis because it has the somewhat "big city" attitude about only caring for yourself. This may be wrong and if it is please correct me. I hate it when people stereotype, but from what I have experienced in the big cities of Indiana(Fort Wayne and Indianapolis) that is the way people act.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people who do support Dubya, but its politics . . so screw it.

Atog Lord, I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay in Indiana. The only shallow people you have to worry about are generally(not all) preps, wiggers, and people who are just trying to fit in. Sorry, if this offends anyone, but that just seems the case. I personally think there are plenty of things to do. You can go fishing and hunting. The only thing I think Indiana suffers is a lack of high speed Internet and Magic: the Gathering tournaments.

OK, IndyTerminator, maybe I was a little harsh, but I don't know whether Columbus is considered a big city anymore, but that's how the people are in southern Indiana in my experience. I do have to say that a lot of the people I still consider friends (and I have been home in England for 13 years) were from northern Indiana, or had spent time there, so it may just be that southern Indiana is like that. I don't know. I would, however, like to apologise to any Hoosiers who I may have offended in the previous post. I was only airing my personal opinions formed from my own experiences.

@yankeedave: Yeah, I'm from around central Indiana. So, I don't know how it really is in southern Indiana. The people down there may very well be shallow. I wasn't offended by your post. It's just that I don't like it when people generalize and make assumptions. Nothing against you or anyone else. Its just something I don't like in general.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this yet: the weather here as opposed to New England is warmer. We still have snow in the winter, and often plenty of it, but it warms up sooner and for longer, based on what NE people have told me. I know grad students stay at school over summers at a higher rate than undergrads, so if you're going to be in the area for July and August, make sure your apartment has solid air conditioning to simulate your homeland's tundra.

Then again, I just remembered that I'm the only person I know who loves winter weather and hates summer weather, so it is possible my preferences are an anomaly. The NOAA historical weather data don't reveal a huge disparity in summer temperatures between NE and the midwest like I was expecting. (Kowal, you lied to me! Razz )

Then you've met another person who doesn't like summer weather. Winter is by far my favorite season. It's been pretty nice this year so far. Last week it snowed in Fort Wayne Smile
