I got the idea for this one at a tournament. It was game 2 and I had sided Red Elemental Blasts into my Food Chain Goblins deck against a High Tide/Solidarity-type deck. I was thinking it would be nice to have a REB that I could cast while tapped out (using an alternate casting cost of "remove a red card in your hand from the game", "sacrifice a mountain", or something like that). But I guess WotC has strayed from giving red the ability to counter blue spells (REB, Pyroblast, Burnout). Then I remembered Deflection's shift to red, Shunt, and came up with this: Change Course 2RR Instant You may remove a red card in your hand from the game rather than pay Change Course's mana cost. Change the target of target spell with a single target. I feel that this is to Shunt what Misdirection is to Deflection. The name is a place holder (not a bad one) that I found while looking for synonyms for shunt. Another (more red) direction I could go is: Change Course 1RR Instant You may remove a red card in your hand from the game rather than pay Change Course's mana cost. Reselect the target of target spell with a single target at random. (Based on the wording for Grip of Chaos.) However, I think this is weak as you could lose two cards and still have the spell target you in the end. If I were to make it random I would want: Change Course R Instant Reselect the target of target spell with a single target at random. Or Change Course 1R Instant Reselect the target of target spell with a single target at random. Draw a card. But both of these do not incorporate the alternate casting cost mechanic I originally wanted. |

Shunt costs less than Deflection, ergo, I felt that this should cost less than Misdirection. ("I feel that this is to Shunt what Misdirection is to Deflection.")

Shunt doesn't cost strictly less than Deflection, though. It's 1RR vs. 3U. If you wanted to keep the analogy, this would have to be 1RRR to Misdirection's 3UU, but that doesn't seem necessary. I can see either 2RR or 3RR working just fine.
Also, I definitely see the analogy to Misdirection as a reason for making this card, but it just feels too similar. Pitch cards have always been made in cycles, anyway; what would you think of making the ACC for this sacrificing a Mountain or two, to give it more Red flavor and differentiate more from Misdirection?

I could go with 1RRR, but 3RR doesn't seem necessary to me. I could also go with an ACC of sacrificing a mountain...

Just sacrificing a mountain is too low a cost, because it doesn't force you to hold anything back. Sacrificing two mountains could work, though.

Sacrificing one mountain for this effect would give stuff like ControlSlaver a very effective way to win counterwars.
Two mountains is appropriate.

Two mountains it is. As for converted mana cost, I would like to keep this at 2RR, but should it be 3RR? Shatterstorm is 2RR and the ACC version (Pulverize) is 4RR. (Shatterstorm reads, "Destroy all artifacts. They can’t be regenerated" while Pulverize just reads, "Destroy all artifacts".) Lightning Blast is 3R and the ACC version (Fireblast) is 4RR...
