I don't remember exactly how it was used, and since they have changed the front page it is no longer searchable, but once again Pro Tour Philadelphia featured a writer using that all too common phrase "The demise of ______ is greatly exaggerated."  I don't know why this infuriates me so much, but it seems every single Magic writer, at one time or another, has used this stock phrase.

The first time i read the phrase was in some Sandman (comic book) issue back in the 90's, but i'm sure the phrase has a longer history than that.  Am i just being paranoid, or is this the trademark phrase of the unoriginal?

Guh.  The original quote is attributed to Mark Twain, who was addressing rumors of his own passing.  "Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated."

Twain was a literary genius. The wizards.com staff is not. It is irritating but I think there are much more annoying things coming out of magic writer's word processors.

If I ever hear someone try to vocalize the word "pwn" I will seriously just destroy them. Look for the rising cloud of fine red mist.

Yeah...I've heard it before. It's not really all THAT bad. It sounds like "pone" (rhymes with "bone", but with a "p"), just to give you an idea.

Now, if someone were to pronounce it like "poon" (rhymes with "spoon", drop the "s"), there would probably be terrible consequences.

I feel that both have become established pronunciations.

The one time I heard it, the kid said "poon." You can imagine the fury.

Out here, it's all pone.  Nobody pawns somebody else, although, when I was 9 and my little brother was 3...

I agree, there is nothing wrong with a random "pone" here or there.  Although, it can get a little bit irritating when used constantly.

I must vehemently disagree with anyone who supports or condones transposing "leetspeak" and "aol-isms" [are these even words?] into spoken English. Their use on the internet is partly pragmatic, partly status indication (For pragma, see: lol, rofl, omg, omfg, ttyl, kthxbi; for status see: l33t, h4x, pwn, ph33r). Carrying these terms into American English bastardizes the language even further and brings even more confusion to an already confusing language. My point is: let's try and keep spoken and formal written English somewhat free of these kinds of things.

Written, and especially spoken language is an ever changing thing.  From a linguistic point of view it is impossible to stop these kinds of net slang terms from invading speech and becoming common in everyday usage.  It is going to happen, in fact it has happened already to some extent.  However, if one recognizes that it is annoying to hear internet speak in everyday conversation, it is then possible to not be that one dumbass who constantly uses it to annoy his or her peers.  Using random acronyms or internet expression has a campy and quirky aspect about it that can be mildly amusing in moderation; however when it is overdone it becomes very annoying and sad, very quickly.  So, in my opinion, internet slang is okay... but in moderation.

A Twain quote that actually should be taken to heart by many magic writers is the following:

Quote from: Mark Twain
Only presidents, editors and people with tapeworm have the right to use the editorial 'we'.

Last night one guy kept talking about his "tech" and when he attacked he would say "beat for two." I have only once ever wanted to strangle someone more.
