Spider Knight  {G}{G} Creature -- Elf Knight 2/4 Spider Knight can't be the target of spells or abilities. Spider Knight may block as though it had flying. The spider knights of the Vintara Forest are the elves' first line of defense. Their mounts grant them superior mobility to ordinary troops and they carry powerful talismans to defend them from less mundane threats.*** I was chatting with Anusien and he raised the point that we don't have enough solid, mid-range, combat-ready creatures in the set. I think I'm done creating wicked, cool white cards for the time being. Instead, I'm going to focus on shoring up the set's sad lack of moderately sized creatures. It's a pretty big challenge, really, since there are only so many variants of minor creature abilities one can have. |

I like it. Untargetability is clearly a green mechanic, and we've seen this sort of casting before (Jolrael's Centaur), and it does a bunch of subtle things very well. The flavor is a bit off. Spider Knight raises images of a "Spider Monkey", whether that's appropriate or not. Spider Knight could be an elf, but how does it actually stop the fliers? It can't climb trees because it's on horseback. Now you could give it a more archer feel (more akin to Longbow Archers) and name it like: Crossbow Cavalry. Also, flavorfully, I'd like to know why it can't be targeted.

A 2/4 actually makes the midrange creature problem worse, since it's such a defensive p/t.

I don't know, J||<3 -- I thought 2/4 definitely classified as a midrange creature. They actually don't make a bad offense because until somebody gets a 2/4 creature of their own, they're reluctant to block the opponent's creature, since it's hard to kill.
Anusien, the elves are riding on the spiders – something that on a real Magic card would definitely be made clear by the art. Maybe I should change the word "spider knights" in the flavour text to "spider riders."

Oh. That's a realy great image then, and it's very very green in flavor.
From the old Shandalar game I can tell you that yes, 2/4 is a very defensive P/t, but it can also be aggressive. a 3/3 for 4 is somewhat more aggressive, but with a 2/4 you're more able to swing into blockers and not get hosed. Still, having creatures with fat asses can't be bad.

I could make this a 3/4 for  {G}{G} -- maybe even a 3/5. I don't think it's ability is excessively better than that of Spitting Spider. Would that make this more respectable as an offensive creature? |

At that point, it'd start to compete for space with all the huge green creatures I made way back when. It's a fine card at 2/4, just not one that's going to make the set more aggressive.
