So due to personal problems and general laziness and forgetfulness, I failed to file my state and federal taxes by April 15.  I mentioned it to my mother in casual conversation, and she freaked.  Evidently this is a big deal.  I feel justified given what the government actually uses my tax dollars for, but that's not going to stand up in court.

To all the TMD accountants and lawyers, what are my options here?  Do I still have an opportunity to file?  Who should I contact?  If you have links, please attach them.

Much Thanks.

Surprisingly, the IRS has a very manageable site that tells you what to do. Go there, wander around a bit and try to find a page relating to filing late. I saw a few FAQs and stuff when I was looking for tax forms there this past April. Basically, you can get a 3-month extension, but you still have 3 years to file taxes.

its a big deal if you don't pay your taxes at all. Its not so much a big deal that if you tell them your taxes will come in late.  It just gives them an oppurtunity to fine you a lot.

That works the same way over here. As long as they're actually going to get it, you shouldn't be in too much trouble.

It IS a big deal - but if you pay it, they won't care.  They only care if you don't actually pay.  Just get on it immediately.
