Shooting Stars in Rochester - THE Vintage Event of the Year!
*Pro Tour Winner* Osyp Lebedowicz
*Pro Tour Winner* Zvi Mowshowitz
*Pro Tour Top 8 Finisher* Chad Ellis
*U.S. National Champion* Craig Krempels
*Pro Tour Top 8 Finisher* Rich Hoaen
*Grand Prix Winner* Tim Aten
*Worlds Top 8 Finisher* Ken Krouner
*Former Canadian National Champion* Josh Rider
*Former Pro Tour Player and all-around Vintage Rabble-rouser* Ben Bleiweiss

... And more!

On Saturday, June 11th, everyone listed above will be coming to Rochester, NY to participate in the biggest Vintage event of the year... "Star City P9 Rochester - Shooting Stars"! Will these current/former Magic: the Gathering pros be able to dominate the Vintage format as they have so many others? More importantly, will they be able to do so when the rest of the field is gunning for them?

Here's the deal.

Many have often wondered what would happen if Pro Tour competitors ever decided to throw their hats into the Vintage arena. Would their years of high-level competitive Magic: the Gathering experience be able to compensate for their lack of experience in the format? At "Star City P9 Rochester - Shooting Stars", that question will finally be answered!

Did you ever think you'd see Zvi Mowshowitz vs. Kevin Cron? Osyp Lebedowicz vs. Ben Kowal? Chad Ellis vs. Andy Probasco? Those are just a few examples of the super-cool matches that may happen at this event! However, it gets even better!

Although the "Stars" will simply be competing alongside everyone else, each will receive three custom-designed t-shirts featuring their own Yawgatog-created imagery. One of those T-shirts is for the "star" to keep, but the other two are going to be given away to the first two players to defeat them in the Swiss! Beating them probably won't be easy, but what Vintage player wouldn't want a shirt proclaiming to the world that they had beaten Ben "The Most Hated Man in Vintage" Bleiweiss?

Can't make the trip? Don't worry. StarCityGames.com is giving you a front row seat to all of the action!

"Star City P9 Rochester - Shooting Stars" will be covered LIVE on the StarCityGames.com website as an exclusive Premium feature! If you've been considering a membership, I can guarantee you that this event coverage alone will be worth the cost of the entire subscription.

Head Judge: Lee McLain; DCI Level 3 Judge

Judge Certification: All spots for judge certification for this event are full.

Miscellaneous Notes:
1. We will have one of our best and most experienced staffs for this event! We will do our very best to ensure that you have the best experience you can have!

Hi all,

First of all I want to publicly thank Chris, and the rest of our friends at Altered States, for providing us with the space in which to host our first P9 event in the Northeast. Altered States is a great store and has done a tremendous job supporting organized play in the Syracuse area. I look forward to working with Chris and his staff again, and would jump at the opportunity to do so.

Before people begin asking and/or speculating about our reasons for relocating the event, the whole issue basically came down to one factor. Size. My staff and I unanimously agreed that Altered States Game and Hobby was simply not large enough to comfortably accomodate our current and future needs. Chris generously offered to do some rearranging in order to accomodate future events, but our issues were with the design of the buidling itself.

However, this was not what caused us to move the event out of Syracuse. Had we been able to find an affordable/available/large enough hotel in the general area, we simply would have rented a large, open ballroom and run the event from that facility. Unfortunately, we weren't able to find anything that was:

a) affordable
b) available on the dates we wanted
and
c) large enough

... and had to begin expanding our search outward. Fortunately, we came upon (what we hope will turn out to be) an excellent site in Rochester, NY and owner, Ed Fear, enthusiasticly offered to host the event at Millenium Games and Hobby.

Best wishes,

Not only is this my local store (no kidding!), but...

From Ted Knutson's Livejournal:

Quote
Shooting Stars
On Saturday June 11th, we will be holding a very special Vintage Power 9 in Rochester, NY. (Osyp, think of this as a very special Dawson's Creek and I know you'll want to be there.) Anyway, June 11th will be the SCG Shooting Stars tournament. The idea behind this is that we have recruited a series of Magic Stars to play in the tournament including many players that do not normally play Type One. Each of the "Stars" will get three T-Shirts with their own custom-designed image courtesy of the incomparable Yawgatog (or the guy who does the kickass Photoshop work for the Premium articles for those who are unfamilar with the name). One of those T-shirts is for the Star to keep, but the other two are going to be given away to whatever players defeat them (along with some small prize To Be Determined - perhaps we should have a hat to pull prize slips from...). Anyway, the Stars that are confirmed as of right now (in no particular order) are:

Pro Tour Winner Zvi Mowshowitz
Pro Tour Top 8 Member Chad Ellis
U.S. National Champ Craig Krempels
Pro Tour Top 8 Member Rich Hoaen
Former Canadian National Champ Josh Rider
Grand Prix Winner Tim Aten
Worlds Top 8 Member Ken Krouner
Pro Tour Winner Osyp Lebedowicz
Ben "The Most Hated Man in Vintage" Bleiweiss (wearing a T-Shirt with a big target on it for the duration of the even

Tentatives/Possibles:
Vintage Star Ben Kowal
Vintage Star Kevin Cron
Stephen Menendian
...and more!

All of you are invited. If you plan to come please let me know well ahead of time, and if you have friends that are Pros who might be interested in playing, please tell me.

The Stars will all be competing for the main prize of drafting the Power 9 with the player pool at large. To sweeten the pot I have added my own 3-D Jester's Cap to the mix (http://www.starcitygames.com/php/news/article/8051.html). Whichever Star posts the strongest finish wins that prize as well. However (since we will be covering the event), if no Stars make the Top 8, then the two highest finishers in the main event will compete for the Cap in a playoff match. The same principle goes for if the final two Stars get knocked out in the Quarterfinals or the Semifinals.

Ahem.

WHAT THE FUCK?  OMG.  Lessee here, all of those people have won something at some point, right?  Zvi and Osyp have won Pro Tours in Block Constructed.  Krouner Top 8ed Worlds.  Rich Hoaen and everyone else has at least a Top 8 in a Pro Tour.  Vintage Grand Prix, anyone?

I'm 99.9% certain that Kevin and Ben will be there and Steve will NOT.  And, it's where I normally go to pwn with cards.  HOW LAUCKY!

TWO "Power Nine" Events in One Weekend! - Yes Vintage fans, you read that correctly! On Sunday, June 12th (the day after Star City "Power Nine" Rochester!) our friends at Altered States are hosting their own "Power Nine" Tournament in Syracuse! The two cities are only 1 ½ hours apart, so if you’re doing some travelling, make plans to stay the extra day and compete for another set of P9 the next day!

Thx

I'll agree here.  Unfortunately, I'm like 1400 miles away, and flying is logistically not possible.  If I were in Michigan at the moment, you'd bet I'd be there instantly.  Unfortuntely, the next Chicago SCG is timed unfortunately for me as well, so I won't be making a big tourney until Gencon it seems.  Drat.

I'm apparently 3852 miles away in Copenhagen, which makes the 2303 miles from Rochester to Davis (where I otherwise would be) seem somewhat closer.

You might be more amused by the fact that he threw away a game to Binghamton's Josh O by playing a lotus petal in to HIS OWN chalice of the void, allowing Josh's welder to fuck him in the butt.

hehehe,

after watching the results of SCG 9, and then re-reading Zvi's "Vintage: How to Ruin a Format in Eight Easy Steps", I can't help but laugh at least a little.

To be fair, most of what Zvi was saying was if pro's started taking the format seriously, which is not what happend at SCG. Still, stuff like this...

"So before I go any further than this initial exploration, I beg of you. Get Ted to pull the plug! Plead with him. Beg and steal. Keep your format for yourselves. Once you open Pandora's Box, it cannot be closed. However, who am I to pass up the chance to see what happens when I arm myself with Black Lotus and Yawgmoth's Will and all those other goodies that no sane man would ever give to a Magic player. "

is hillarious in hindsight.

he got his chance,
whoot whoot for  91st place and the best pro placing with UG fish!
