kill: 12

3 worldgorger dragon
1 ambassador laquatus
1 Caller of the claw
1 Kumano, Master Yamabushi
4 Animate Dead
2 Necromancy

disrupt: 8
4 FoW
4 duress

draw: 15
3 intuition
3 buried alive
1 demonic tutor
2 read the runes
1 mystical tutor
2 compulsion
1 entomb
2 lim-dul's vault

gas: 25
4 dark ritual
1 underground sea
1 underground river (no more sea...)
1 chrome mox
1 mox diamond
4 gemstone mine
1 sol ring
2 polluted delta
4 forbidden orchard
1 mana crypt
3 island
2 swamp

SB: 15
2 REB
2 Pernicious Deed
3 Verdant force
2 rack and ruin
2 sacred ground
2 ray of revalation

I'm making a budget dragon since stax was deemed nigh unworkable without a major facelift. Budget concerns:

bazaar= compulsion. crappy replacement I know, but it works.
read the runes = instant speed compulsion

So... should I play Duress or Xantid Swarm? Should I cut blue and run black/green?

pleease... Smile

blue gives me access to FoW, intuition and lim-dul's vault.

green gives me ESG, Xantid and possibly eternal witness. Then I'd have to be B/G spoils, but I'd lack compulsion...

thoughts? card choices? lists?

I have a kind of funny list for budget players who don't get to attend proxy tourneys:

4 Academy Rector
4 Cabal Therapy
4 Duress
4 Buried Alive
2 Worldgorger Dragon
1 Ambassador Laquatus
4 Animate Dead
3 Necromancy
2 Dance of the Dead
3 Seal of Cleansing
1 Necropotence
1 Yawgmoth's Bargain
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Balance
4 Dark Ritual
1 Mana Crypt
1 Sol Ring
1 Mana Vault
1 Lotus Petal
1 Chrome Mox
1 Mox Diamond
4 Bloodstained Mire
1 Flooded Strand
1 Plains
4 Scrubland
4 Swamp

It's like Rector Trix minus Force, and with a combo that you can actually pull off really easily without the Rector engine. Adding the Rector/Therapy/Bargain just gives a more consistent plan in that it's another set of cards that win you the game. Being able to maindeck 3 copies of Seal is pretty brutal as well, and some things can be cut for even more MD hate. Just an idea.

Why'd I want to play rector trix? If I was going to play rector trix, I'd stick to my fave kill, tendrils of agony. Smile

Why not Careful Study?

If you end up not playing Careful Study, and play 3-4 Buried Alive instead maybe you don't need 3 dragons.

No, just like I described it isn't Rector Trix. Rector Trix would be bad with no power. Dragon is bad with no Bazaars at least. I took the engine that made Trix playable and combined it with a combo that is easily castable on its own (Buried Alive and an Animate spell), without any power cards needed.

Hrm, good point bullsonparade, but it'd take away the fact that gorger is a combo deck that stands up to chalice and null rod hate, two of the most commonly used cards in my meta. Smile I'm just not confident in trying to cast rector early on. Too many factors need to be in place before I can go off.

Xantid Swarm amazing. Duress doesn't win the game for you when your opponent has 3 disenchants in hand. Okay that's kinda unlikely but the reasoning is if you play xandit swarm you opponent must counter it or kill it before it attacks or they lose the game. So it's essentially a duress if it dies and usually better than that.

You should look into the spoils dragon deck. I don't remember the list off hand but I'm sure you can find it. It's the fastest version of budget dragon. It plays spoils of the vault, dark ritutal, and buried alive I believe. I don't know if cabal ritual was in that deck but it might be good. Of course since it's mono black it has no answers to crypt or anything so a splash might help.... actually that deck is probably terrible but check it out..

@zomar

The spoils build oly works well if you have bazaars (which are out of reach for me...)

Ill always ask it...

why kumano over hellkite?

is it purely because kumano MIGHT be more hardcastable?

Xantids pwn face

People play Kumano because:

1. He's a pimp.
2. You can pull them packs.
3. A lot more little kids have him.
4. He's a pimp.
5. You have a slight chance of hardcasting him, and if you do you can RFG things like Wealder, Lackey etc.
6. He's a P-I-M-P.

he only costs 1 less than hellkite......

the only deck really in the format that removing them from the game could possibly matter is Cerebral Assasin...but even then that argument is a little flat...

Hellkite wins games a turn sooner than Kumano when just animated by itself in Dragon...that can be a very big deal...

I use Kumano because I don't have the hellkite yet. Smile

Having the hellkite can make me have the reanimate OMG win scenario. :p
