I like the new face.  Its cleaner, the text is legible.  There is more room for text and image.  However, I do have a problem with the new faces.  Its that darn grey drop shadow that everything has.  Makes everything look plasticy, and bulbous.  I think there could have been a solution that didn't involve the card bursting off the board.  All though it makes the cards more legible and readable from a distance, I still don't like it.

As for the character of the cards. I think most of the colours have retained thier original spirit. The black cards still have the bubbly muck, the green cards still have leafy features.  Only white and Artifacts have really lost out.  Oh and Gold cards, they'll have to adjust the colour balance on them, they're too yellowy.

I miss the way on green cards it looked like there was wood in the text box.  That was a really neat touch, that the old cards had to them.

Yeah, the gold cards look horrible now.

Actually all the colors, plus artifacts, had a unique background. Blue and red were the most boring. Artifacts had tile and white had a sort of stucco look and black had an ancient parchment.

One thing I really liked about the ancient cardface was how the lands would change from set to set. In Ice Age/Alliances they had a purplish look, in Homelands blue, in other sets varieties of gray and tan and brown.

Wizards could easily add this background just as they added coloured mana symbols and Artifact backgrounds that were different to White ones. It seems to be a fairly common complaint and very easy to solve without affecting the new format. If I were skilled in such things I'd do a few mock-ups and sent them a Before/After mail or two.

The new cardstyle was the reason i stopped collecting the fifth set of all my sets. So it saves me a lot of money, but that is the only good thing there is.

Next to style, perhaps some of the newer people should look at the older cards. Most of the art of the old cards you actually can see what the name suggests you will see. That is something that got lost along the way somewhere. That also is a pity.

But Loathing is not even strong enough for what i think of the new lay out of the cards. Vomiting, if only some of them were not that good, i would not have to play them at all.
