Name
{R}
Creature --
1/1
First strike
Whenever ~this~ deals combat damage to a creature, that creature's controller gets a poison counter.

No idea on the flavor, but the idea was to have a guy you would rather let through than block, and to do it using the poison mechanic.

Would it be cooler as a 1/1 doublestriker, for more mana?

I like this.  It's interesting, although I think it may be a tad under-priced.  I'd cost it at 1R and follow in the trend of 1R First strikers for 1/1 with a cool ability.

There are no R 1/1 with First strike, but at 1R you have:
Goblin Striker
Pouncing Kavu
Thunderscape Familiar

Should this really be red?

Current wording:

Name
{R}
Creature --
1/1
First strike
Whenever ~this~ deals combat damage to a creature, that creature's controller gets a poison counter.

It could also be white. Or red and white.

No, I'd keep it red but make it 1R for a 1/1.  Sort of along the lines of Battle-Mad Ronin, where he's just going to get across for 1 a turn.  I like this guy, actually.

But with the Ronin, if you block you usually lose a guy. With this, if you block you get a poison counter and he dies. That's probably going to be worth it if the alternative is taking more than one hit from him--and for 1R, that seems a little weak.

What if he had Provoke instead of First Strike?

So you trade this guy for your opponent's best X/1 and a poison counter?  If that's not the direction Matt wants to take this card, I call dibs on that flavor.  I have a great idea for an inept assassin...

Bump. Somehow this should be a guy you don't want to block. Goblin Swine Rider, but Poison?

How about:

1R
snake
first strike
Whenever (name) becomes blocked, creatures blocking (name) gain "During your upkeep, you get a poison counter."
1/1

Not sure if that text is clear but the idea is if your opponent blocks him, he gets a poison counter every turn until he can get rid of his own creature.  Like the creature is sick and contagious.
