Welders are rarer here in Manila because they and artifacts are so strongly hated out.

I've had some hands, however, where an opponent's first-turn Welder proves a bit troublesome for Thirsts of Knowledge especially if you have to discard something like Lotus Petal. Yes, there's Darkblast and all, but has anyone had any occasional trouble running Thirst in Gifts against Welders?

Not in SSB style gifts.  Who cares about active welder?  Just slave at them or belch at them.

In other style gifts lists though, yeah, that's a problem.  That's why I don't play those lists.

Sorry... by SSB-style Gifts, I meant the one with Thirsts. Sorry if I got the nomenclature mixed up... I just came from the Bar exams and six months of doing nothing but staring at law books.

I had this problem during a playtest game where a friend testing his Slaver played a first-turn Welder, then I played a first-turn Thirst and had to choose between discarding Lotus Petal, good cards, or land I needed.

Er... Slave them? I don't understand.

Wait... I think I meant "SB" as in Short Bus.

Oscar, that shouldn't be a problem because in the long game you will just Yawg Will all that stuff back into play before you kill them with your artifact.

Yeah, that's how I frustrate people who side Energy Flux against me locally.

I just had this experience where the normal play would be to chuck Lotus Petal to first-turn Thirst, but my opponent's Welder threatens to turn my Moxen into Petals.

Like I e-mailed, this could be a stupid question, but I think my tourney appearance due to vacation has made Gifts the Manila flavor of the month, so CS is gone from the local meta for now, and this situation hasn't come up a lot for me.

I have not played SSB style gifts against a first turn welder, but I did play gifts oath this past weekend at a local tournament and it is quite threatening when you mill all of you moxes into the graveyard and oath out the colossus. Post sideboard is a better match because of the addition of pithing needles which is a great help at shutting down the little guy.

gifts(not oath) should'nt have a problem with welder...
the only problem (if it is one) is you'll have to cast severence first(which you probably do first anyway..)
