Waterbury…Stratford. Out with the old and in with the new.
I would have gotten this report out sooner but this past week was midterms at school. Hope you all understand.
TMD OPEN 10
TO Tournament Report: A topic by topic presentation
Version 4.62
Derek MacAtovey, Mike Spencer, Jarad Demick, Chris Kitzmiller:
For every claim that one of my tournaments went well, these guys deserve a pat on the back. When on day one, one of our judges did not show up, Head Judge Derek and the staff stepped up to the challenge of helping make the event run smoothly. With round by round deck checks, a round one check of all 153 decklists, handling judge calls, and oh so much more, these guys cant get enough of my thanks and praise. The next time you see any of them at an event, shake their hands.
Free Side Event for a Mana Drain:
Another great side tourney that many enjoyed after a not-so-good start in the main event. This thing came to a close with a top 4 of Tommy Kolowith, Ross Merriam, Mike Schneier, and Dan Yarrington. Mike beat Dan and Ross beat Tommy. In the finals, Ross’s Counterbalance/Sensei’s Top Deck lost to Mike’s Cerebral Assassin deck.
Free Urza’s Legacy Duplicate Sealed event:
8 Teams entered. In the end, Team Perfect Scrub defeated Team ICBM in the finals. Events like this were very fun for all who participated and will surely be done again in the future.
Deck Registration:
Fewer people than last time had registration errors on their decklist. I am happy to see more people double and triple checking their decklists before the event. This makes everbodys life easier.
The Long Distancers:
With representation from team ICBM, Meandeck, GWS, and the Michigan crew there was plenty of Midwest representation at this event. I got really excited when Davide Cohen told me he was the furthest traveled to this event and showed me his Italian driver’s License. I felt deceived when I was informed that he did not travel here from Italy just for the tournament(which the prize is intended for), and was rather studying abroad in New York for the semester so he decided to come up.
Myriad Games:
Special thanks to the wonderful guys at Myriad Games for providing prize support, life total pads, and pens. Even more thanks to Sara Yarrington for her wonderful tasty Mana Symbol Cookies. All who received them enjoyed them very much.
GamingEtc.com:
Special thanks to Howie and GamingEtc.com for the use of their store for this event.
Venue spacing:
As this was the first event of this size that I have held at Gaming Etc. com some spacing on Day one before we rearranged the tables was tight. This won’t be an issue in the future.
Single Elimination Cut:
I thought this idea was flawless when I thought it up. I’m still not sure, and will be continuing to seek your input on the issue. Please feel free to respond in this thread about whether we should do it again or not.
Posting of decklists:
Same as above. I would love to hear people’s feedback on the pros and cons of this to decide if it should be done in the future. Please respond in this thread.
Main Event:
153 people. Started promptly at 11:15.
Thank you all so much for coming. Waterbury would not be the biggest tournament in the world if only half of you came. It takes all your support to make TMD OPEN what it is, and I can’t thank you all enough.

Free Timetwister Tourney on Day 2:
Because of the record high attendance on Day 2 I announced, “That I feel like giving out more free prizes!”. Accordingly, after round 4, we took sign ups for a free single elimination tourney for a Timetwister. The top 4 saw Mark Biller defeat Dan Carp and Jason Hall defeat Ling Yeung. In the finals, Mark Biller’s Gifts deck just couldn’t handle the Bomberman deck piloted by Jason.
Team Magic Trivia on Day 2 was great:
5 teams provided a well rounded group and all teams received prizes. I think all in all I gave about a box worth of packs out along tons of wonderful Mana Symbol Cookies. It was a lot of fun for all.
Magic Scattegories:
Also went well with about 4 teams. Mostly consisting of ICBMers, the expected victors of Ben Carp and Dan Carp were defeated by a single point.
TMD OPEN X Bingo:
Huge thanks to Dave Feinstein for donating prize support for this fun event. It always surprises me that more people don’t participate since it is free and totally easy to do. I am adding a TMD Open X official playmat to the prize support and sending it off to Mike Lydon. Congrats.
