I just wanted to say that the last section on Flash's brokenness was probably the most thorough and well-thought out (as well as refreshingly objective) look on the issue I've read so far. The analysis of the arguments and their flaws was great  It's good to see a voice like yours not using your column as a bully pulpit to push either way.

I also love the Tyrant Oath list you've been using for your articles. It looks familiar Smile

Considering the best decks ever is a really difficult; much like trying to compare athletes from different eras.  Since the cardpool is constantly evolving and growing, I think it would be none too surprising if the current Top Tier decks are always going to be better (at least on average) than older decks.  As more cards are added to the game, the number of combinations grows exponentially.  Keeping the older decklists static puts them at an inherent disadvantage.

Perhaps a more fair way to test the "Banned/Restricted" decks would be to allow the core of the decks to be built around with the existing cardpool.  For instance, just build a deck with 4 Balances -- I imagine that could be transformed into quite a force; however, the downside is a lot of effort required to build decks that cannot be realistically played with.

Even when building decks with the current card-pool it would be difficult if not impossible to build it as good as it gets, since you can't possibly test a deck as much as it would have been in the environment it was originally in. Tournament, practice and goldfishes would all build up a deck much better then just making a list and testing it a bit.

A deck with 4 balance and 4 trinispheres would probably be really good.

Haven't read the article, so can't really comment on that.
