...NetHack.  Fuck yeah.
Just DL'ed it a day or two ago and I finally got to Sokoban before dying horribly at the mouths of a horde of giant ants.  Meh.  I never thought ASCII could be so engaging!

Nethack is a great game. I used to play it all the time. I see they even created a GUI on it now? Don't know if it has the same apeal. Maybe I'll start over again and try it out.

Honestly, the GUI's uglier than the real thing.  Never thought I'd prefer a lowercase i to a picture of a demon, but hey.

I've played both the graphical version and the ascii version.  I have no real preference because I suck at both.  I've never accomplished anything noteworthy in a game of nethack.

From what I understand there are people who have played the game for the last 30 years and haven't ever ascended.  It's probably got something to do with that whole "if you die you DIE" thing.  Most of my characters get to like level 7 or 8 before a long string of unfortunate events does him in.

Honestly unless you read the extensive Nethack primers and stuff, you'll putz around on the game a little but never ascend or get close to it. The game requires a lot of external reading and busywork for you to win (unless you scum : )

Well, I just made it down to level 10 with a Barbarian who was high as a kite after eating the wrong kind of mushroom... Eventually a nasty wizard sleep ray-ed him while some monsters killed him
