Rules Tip of the Day: You can only sacrifice a permanent to pay a cost or to satisfy an effect, not just because you want to. You mean I can't sacrifice my mana crypt during my opponent's end step? damn... this card sucks. j

Man, that would make Mindslaver even MORE insane.
"Ok, you will...um, play this stuff and then sacrifice your board. That's it."

Next tip will probably be: You can only draw card(s) in your drawstep or when a card instructs you too, not because you want too.

A way better tip would be
"You can only sacrifice a creature ONCE"
I'm always teaching new people to play and it seems like all they ever want to do is sacrifice a creature to every effect under the sun. Like: I'll equip Skullclamp on blood pet, and then I'll play Culling the weak, and in response I'll sac Blood pet to ashnod's alter, and then sac him for black. So i get 2+BBBB+B and draw 2 cards! >_<

I find it difficult to consider any rules statement really a "tip" ... A tip is a tip... Thats like a ref saying to Michael Jordan... You know... If you dribble the ball... pick it up... and dribble it again... its a travel... Not so much a tip as it is just a captain obvious statement.

Wow. Rough, guys. He's been doing the 'tips' thing for a while, and probably ran out of worthwhile things to put up there, so he put up something fairly random. To be fair, there are definitely a share of small kids just learning who think they can sacrifice stuff just because they feel like it. (Also, untapping Rootwalla with Seeker of Skybreak apparently lets it attack twice. BUH-ROKEN!)

Don't get me wrong, I totally appreciate what he is doing. I found it funny because it is something we as verteran players take for granted, like "summoning sickness" and the like. I can think of a ton of things I did wrong when I started playing, like dropping all lands i had in my opening hand. First turn Juzams all the time, without power hahaha.

Maybe you guys got confused by the name, but the basic point is to clarify something that keeps showing up in the "ask the judge questions"--not every question makes it into the articles, so he can save space by answering common problems with the tip of the day instead of over and over in the questions section.

Rule Tip of the Day: Read the frickin' rulebook!
I want to clarify this thread. I don't want anyone raggin on Chris. He provides an invaluable service for the magic community. I just posted it because I found it humorous. Like Jacob said, he posts those because of multiple people questioning this. It is something that someone playing for a while takes for granted as common sense, but a newb (which his column is designed for, idealy) might not know. j

That's ok, Brian. I'm sure you can find some scrub who wants to buy your foil Hatching Plans.

Remind me, why wouldn't you just play Time Walk and Ancestral Recall? Or, if you really wanted, you could still play Hatching plans as Standstill and still be able to use Abjure. :/

Remind me, why wouldn't you just play Time Walk and Ancestral Recall? Probably because those two get cast right away. Also, Standstill does not combo with Abjure.

Hatching Plans + anything with a reciprocal sacrifice effect.
Or even better, if your opponent has an Enchantment in play cast Hatching Plans and then Simplify. GG

Orrery makes Hatching Plans an answer to Disk + Vengeance, and it makes Misdirection a threat versus Disenchant.
