In Northern California, at Pro Star Sports/Games in Milpitas, 12 players showed up. Â That's why this is in Tourney Report Submission forum. Â Lots of hilarity is involved (usually these tournies include at least 20 people, but of the 12, at least 10 were good decks/players. Â I leave it for you to decide what is what.
The report if from our Norcal Site, link is at my signiature quote thingy. Â Posts on TMD are extremely welcome, as TMD=T1, but the NorcalVintage site (whatever the URL is) is usefull to Northern California T1 players. Â Enjoy.
(YES!!!! My opponent played Yawgmoth's Will into my Chalice for 3!!!!!!!!!)
Read on (or click to link on) to find out more!!!
12 players show up, but the store decides that that is enough so it is 4 rounds of Swiss and then cut to top 6. The 1st and 2nd seeds after Swiss get a bye so it's 3-6 that duke it out for the true top 4.
EDIT: Christian Royers and Victor Anderson split finals for the Mox Jet!!!
1) Andrew Lomotan with Stax
2) Pat Lam with Fish (RWB with Scrublands!)
3) Austin Martinez with TimeBandits! (mono-R Stax with FlameVault capability)
4) Christian Royer with Intuition Tendrils
5) Dan Messineo with Bob and Tom (Bob and Dimir Cutpurses)
6) Victor Anderson with TPS w/Bob
7) Jeff Neilson with The Gilded Claw (4 SB Leyline of the Void!)
8) Albert Ye with UbaStax
9) Tony Marquez with 5c Stax
10) Michael Klemic with FlameVault Gifts?
11) Chris Poff with 5c Stax with Hatching Plans (4 SB Leyline of the Void!)
12) Brent Petterson with 5c Stax
Thats right, 5 Stax, 1 Workshop Aggro out of 12 players.
My sucky tourney report:
Round 1: Dan Messineo
Game 1 He loses so by default, I win. Ugliness on both parts.
Game 2: I lose so Dan by default wins on turn 5 of time.
Draw.
Round 2: Christian Royer
Game 1: He wins
Game 2: He wins
Round 3: Chris Poff
Game 1: I mull to 5, play 2nd turn Memory Jar to get back in game and win sooner or later.
Game 2: He tutors for Jester's Cap (i belive) and caps me turn 2. I have 47 threats maindeck and he thought I might have like 5.
Round 4: Brent Petterson
Game 1: I turn 1 mox mox chalice for 1 tolarian academy tinker for Sundering Titan, go. 3 turns later we go to game 2.
Game 2: He opts to go first. I drop Layline of the Void. He leads with a bunch of permanents and Trinisphere. I start with Land, go for 3 turns. Then drop Seal of Cleansing to take out his SmokeStack , sacking my Leyline to keep my mana base availiable. Then I start dropping permanents and cool stuff. Win against Brent for the first time ever. He didn't like his deck that day and made it pretty clear. Wheee!
I miss top 8.
Austin's mini-report:
Game 1 Bye because his opponent had a Bye from a previous qualifier thing. Go Austin!
Game 2: Victor Anderson. Austin wins on turn 5 of extra turns after Victor's Yawgmoth's Bargain gets him down to 1 life and a bunch of cards in hand. On Victors upkeep, Austin correctly picked the correct call on Victor's Mana Crypt. Austin wins! Go Austin.
Game 3: Austin dies to Stax (the guy who got 1st seed after Swiss)
Game 4: Christian Royer
ID into top 6 (punk!)
Top 3-6:
Its Victor versus Austin and Dan versus Christian.
Austin wins game 1 with first turn trinisphere and other goodness.
Austin loses game 2 when he topdecks land and defense grids for about 9 turns in a row.
Austin loses game 3 because he cast a spell, that is an instant, at sorcery speed for no effect. Tony might want to elaborate more on this play, as my stomache is still aching from watching this play. Ok, I'll spare Tony.
The senario: Austin has SmokeStack ramped up to 2, with crucible out and has Shop, Mountain, Mountain, Ruby and Cap out. Victor has a few permanents and a Pithing Needle set to Cap.
Austin plays Sirocco tapping mountain and mountain leaving Ruby untapped.
At sorcery speed.
Card type: Instant
Casting cost: 1R
Oracle text: Target player reveals his or her hand. For each blue instant card revealed, he or she pays 4 life or discards that card.
Victor had recently resolved a Yawgmoth's Bargain (that he brainstormed into) and had 1 card in hand.
1 card.
That's when Austin played Sirocco.
at Sorcery Speed.
Austin didn't fully appreciate the Uber Scrub Suckiness of the play until after he passes the turn, Victor sacs Pithing Needle and something else to SmokeStack.
With no 2 mana for Cap, Austin got to watch Victor Goldfish his storm deck.
To be fair, Victor had 2 Forces in opening hand to deal with Austin's first turn Sphere of Resistance and 2nd turn Goblin Welder.
VIctor may well have draw 9 cards off Bargain only to walk into Sirrocco for 12 (that would have been cool).
As is, it only showed Austin that Victor had a Dark Ritual in his hand.
Lame.
Props:
to the 12 players who showed up.
Anybody who struck a pose for my Dark Confidant collection
Austin for making top 6.
Slops:
the 20 other players who could have shown up but didn't.
Austin for being such a scrub.
