Hey, i am new to the forums. I love vintage and have been playing around with dragon.dec as of late. I was wondering why dragon doesn't run misdirections. You could replace the duress with them. You could use them to counter other peoples counters and stuff that would usually ruin your combo. I think they would be very useful. Just a thought. Let me know what you think!

There are two uses for Duress. Duress can be used for force through your own spells. It can also be used to slow down an opponent's gameplan. Duress, therefore, can be used as both an offensive and defensive card. If you play out some Dragon vs Long games, you will quickly see how Duress' dual nature is quite important, especially against quick decks.

Now, consider Misdirection. Outside of Winning Teh Prize off Ancestral Recall, Misdirection is really only good for forcing through your own spells. However, sometimes Dragon needs to play defensively and use its permission to stop an opponent, rather than to advance its own gameplan per se.

That is why Misdirection and Xantid Swarm are not maindecked in Dragon.

Now, perhaps you ask, why does Long maindeck Misdirection? The answer is that Long is faster than Dragon, and unlike Dragon really can't ever take the defensive roll in a match. Therefore, in a deck which is always offensive and never defensive, Misdirection makes far more sense.

That all being said, I've sideboarded a Misdirection in Dragon with Wishes to excellent effect.

To add on to what rich has to say a little bit. Duress is able to take cards that are unmisdirectable. Alot of the cards that hurt dragon very rarely have a MisD. target. Exp StP, Stifle, ray of revelation. Of course they sometimes can be misd, but unlike PitchLong misdirection generally isnt as versatile as duress.

In pitchlong misdirection is almosts always used as a counter to a counter... whether that be FoW, Drain, etc. Dragon unlike Pitchlong has FAR more scary things that can happen when comboing off then seeing a FoW...If a reanimate is FoW'ed thats not big deal... You can try again next turn 1 spell game over... With Pitchlong for example if a bomb of yours is countered it could take turns to setup a practical bomb.

if you duress ray of revelation aren't you screwed anyway?  Razz

ok...on a more serious note.  if you're playing WGDX board MisD cus you can wish for it and get protection if you need it or steal an ancestral.
