While browsing through a thread on TMD stuff (say, the SCG ManaDrain "Deal") I clicked on a link on Mike Long.

It brought me to a www.Wikipedia linke to him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Long which brought up some "condescending" tabloidesque tidbits about Mike Long and Roland Bode I dug further and found this:

http://www.starcitygames.com/php/news/article/5415.html

An early Smmemen article on T1 Broken Decks (This was written I assume about the time I started to get the feel for T1 competetive (as opposed to Powered Slivers w/Time Twister) decks.  My first ass handing came via Rectal Agony versus my Merfolk deck (much like Fish Decks of today).

Does anyone else have some cool T1 historical stuff they can give up/link for "History Lessons" for us folk who are still newish to Vintage.  (I made my first broken deck at the tail end of Mirroden Block (Salvagers with Trinket Mage: SlapJack) but had been following TMD for about 6 months up to that point.)

I suppose this is only tangentaly related to what you were looking for but I recently found an interview with Mike Long from 98 that is far kinder than most anything else I have read with/about him.

This book, while outdated regarding actual information (put out at the time of stronghold) was an invaluable resource to me starting out, and I still use it for statistics.  In the back it has charts and graphs showing the odds of getting a particular card in your hand, depending on how many are in your deck, and what your odds are of seeing it as you draw, as well as a few other things.

As for why it pertains to this thread, there is a great chapter on decks in it.  They arent just vintage decks, but decks from all formats.  It describes the history of "The Deck", Necrowinter, straight burn, ehrnageddon, and even decks back when you could have 4 balance.  Its a great history lesson on where some of the famous decks in magic came from.

There is also an interesting chapter on drafting.  Because the book was released at the time Stronghold had just came out, they use it as an example.  They go through the entire set, and explain why or why not cards will work in a limited environment.

If you can pick up this book used for a good price, I would highly reccommend it.

I always found a great way to relive the history of magic is by reading old inquests/Scryes. They always talked about what the "hot cards" or top decks were, and then would give you horrible decks that were actually seeing play. I lived/played through magic since about revised so I know all the history of the black summer, combo winter, tempest burn decks... Trix, etc... However, sooo  many new players look at cards that I deam classics and then have to read the card as if they have never seen it yet alone no its significance.

Another great way is to look at the Vintage Archive forums dating back as far as possible to see arguements about "the deck", TNT, 4 gush GAT, Neo-Academy, and even Zoo.

I totally forgot about that.  I think it got wrecked when my basement flooded, but a couple of years ago Inquest put out an issue that had the top 10 decks of all time.  It had the IA necro deck, "the deck", prosbloom, some G/R beats deck with kird apes (showing one of the first "constructed with a purpose" decks".  I also love reading the reader submitted decks.  I remember making the Serra Angel/Island Sanctuary/Mystic Decree cuz I thought it was so boss at the time.

I recently stumbled upon this while searching for something, and it took me back. Type 1 was so much cooler back then. Everything went downhill from the restriction of Gush.

I have that IQ sitting in my room at home. It has an Ed Beard cover with a chick walking towards a citadel and there's hidden stuff in the art.

The top decks of all time were, in no order:

Bazaar Reanimator
Maysonet Rack/Balance
Titania's Song/Balance
Erhnamgeddon
Vise Age
The Deck
Necro
BG LD with Instill Energy'd Demonic Hordes
Kird Ape burn with Timetwister and Wheel to restock the burn
Prosbloom

I have a stack of old IQs from like 1997-2001 and they are pretty good bathroom reading.
