5 Years of Waterbury in the books. It feels like only yesterday I was running 30 person type 2 tournaments out of 1/3 of the main ballroom.
Sorry for the delay with this report. The benefit tournament for Roland and Jacob followed this weekend, and then Gencon right after.
Without further ado:
TMD OPEN 9
TO Tournament Report: A topic by topic presentation
Version 1.42
Setup:
The Marriott does it to me AGAIN. They know that I have to setup the room to my specifications the night before an event, so when given the option of putting a group in the ballroom I use, or the other one, for a late night event Friday, they always choose the one that I need to use.
At least they gave me a glimmer of hope. I called the hotel at 2:00 pm to ask if there were any groups in that ballroom, or could I come down and setup. They say no and tell me to come on down.
Well, wouldn’t ya know it, when I get there, sure enough they are setting up for a 6-10pm party. The banquet coordinators response, “My Bad.”
Most have never seen my “angry face”. She did that day.
So I go and so some other stuff I have to do after unloading things from my car and storing them in a supply cabinet at the hotel. I get all the soda, chips, etc from other places and I meet Derek McAtovey and Mike Spencer for a screening of Clerks 2, and some good eats at Friendly’s until we can go setup. We meet Jacob Orlove and Ben Kowal at the hotel while setting up and get back to my place around 2pm.
Computer Problems:
There were minor problems getting my computer to start and scares that it would freeze up, but we had a backup plan of Todd(one of the vendor’s laptops) and were backing up the tournament files all weekend.
Cake and Cookies:
As a special surprise to celebrate the 5 year anniversary of Waterbury, we had a huge cake and Mana Symbol cookies provided by Myriad Games, and Sara Yarrington in particular. Everyone got some, and most got seconds. It was a nice and tasty way to celebrate.
Last Man Standing:
We premiered a new game called Last Man Standing. It went quite well, being run during extra turns, so as to not hold up the tournament. Official TMD Open shirts were used as prizes.
Derek McAtovey, Mike Spencer, Jarad Demick, Chuck Perrault, Raymond Clavette:
These are the guys who deserve much more credit than they get. Derek, Mike, Jarad, Chuck, and Ray gave up whole days of playing just to work the main table, answer judge calls, hand out match slips, get sodas and snacks, setup, cleanup, and much more. I can’t stress enough how important they were in everything running smoothly. If you see any of them at a tournament, and you enjoyed Waterbury, be sure to thank them.
Oliver Beaumont, Jason LeDuc, Chris Kitzmiller, Dan Richardson:
In addition to my full time staff, these wonderfully qualified judges rounded out a group that was quite efficient and consistent with rulings. Props to the four of you and the great work you did.
UK Scoring System:
Didn’t happen. We are getting smarter than those brits.
Carl Winter:
Like a man back from the dead, this old-timer of vintage returned triumphantly to finish first after swiss. Sadly he could not make it past Rob Costanza, but he lead his team to a team victory. Hopefully this was a sign we will see Carl again in the future.
Free Side Event for a Mana Drain:
This was a huge success and something I look forward to doing again in the future. I may, however, alter it in some way so it doesn’t run later than the main event.
Deck Registration:
Many people every Waterbury receive penalties for incorrect/incomplete deck registration sheets. While I was happy to see that many people who received game losses for mistakes ended up winning that match by winning the next two games, the penalty is still one that is firmly a game loss at any level. Why? Simply put, a mistake on a decklist is one that SHOULD NEVER BE MADE. You can double, triple, and quadruple check a decklist, and have more than enough time preparing for a tournament to write down your deck. Let’s shoot for 100% perfect decklists at the next event, shall we?
The Long Distancers:
Waterbury keeps stretching its wonderful grasp across the Continental US. We had two people fly in from California, and one from Oregon to be with us. My only question is such…when are you Europeans coming? Remember, any European gets free entry into the main event.
Main Event:
147 people. Started promptly at 11:15.

Waterbury would not be the biggest tournament in the world if only half of you came. It takes all your support to make Waterbury what it is, and I can’t thank you all enough.

Team Magic Trivia on Day 2 was great. 7 teams provided a well rounded group and all teams received prizes. I think all in all I gave about a box worth of packs out along with other stuff. It was a lot of fun for all.
After day 2, ICBM, Mike, Derek, and I went to get some late night food. Denny’s was packed because Ozzfest had just gotten out so we went to Howard Johnsons. Much fun was had especially when we got the waitress back for her rudeness by paying the $98.96 bill in 98 Ones, 8 Nickels, 5 Dimes, and 6 Pennies. She counted wrong the first time so I replied curtly, “Well, I guess you should count it again.”
So overall, even though Day 1’s attendance was a little low, I still ended a little bit above break even due to the decline in prices of moxes, and as such, my buyback prices. More importantly, though, everything went VERY smoothly. For this reason alone, I would most certainly call this Waterbury a success.
