This was a long time coming.
My two astronomy profs in college were of the same mind....as for what it affects - nothing really, other than the printing of some textbooks. It's semantics.

It's not like the Romans were ever very serious about the Greek gods anyway. Man, it would be sweet if the planets had the Greek names, though. We'd be arguing about whether Hades was a planet or not!

Fortunately, it will take forever for this news to get to the former planet (since it's so freaking far away), so we will all have time to die in the meantime and let our children take the responsibility for us.

What?
I heard on the grapevine that Pluto acually kept its status, and two other planetoids (the moon Ceres and the "iceberg" Xena) were upgraded to the status of planets because a change in the definition of 'planet' that resulted in us now having 12 instead of 9. Or did they invent a new subgroup of planets for those three?
How cool that there's misinformation about something like this. Either way, this is gonna mean lots of work for astrologers (more than for astronomers, anyway ;-)

"Although we think it's Dopey that Pluto has been downgraded to a dwarf planet, which has made some people Grumpy and others just Sleepy, we are not Bashful in saying we would be Happy if Disney's Pluto would join us as an eighth dwarf. We think this is just what the Doc ordered and is nothing to Sneeze at." Quoted from Eonline.com I think.

If being depicted as a clumsy animated dog didn't annoy the God of the Underworld, it is unlikely that classifying a lump of rock as a slightly different lump of rock will bug her.

I actually think they now make a difference between a planet and a dwarf planet. has something to do with the path something has around the body it rotates about. Could be they all three are now considered dwarf planets. Three more dwarfs, now where does Snowwhite sleep.

They wanted to define planet as any mass that orbits a sun and has enough mass for its gravity to shape it into a spheroid. This would keep Pluto a planet and make Charon (its moon), Ceres (an asteroid between Mars and Jupiter) and Xena a planet. They defined planet this way instead: any mass that orbits a sun, has enough mass for its gravity to shape it into a spheroid, and have enough gravity to clear its own orbit. So because Pluto doesn't have its own orbit (it shares one with Neptune), it's not a planet.

So because Pluto doesn't have its own orbit (it shares one with Neptune), it's not a planet.
Trouble is, whether any planet has 'cleared its own orbit' is questionable - Earth is still at risk from some large chunks of rock floating out there, and so by that definition, Earth could be argued not to be planet. Also, that stipulation carries the additional problem that the younger the planetary system, the bigger something needs to be to gain planethood. I think there's going to be a whole load of wrangling over this, and that definition of a planet might be revised, but the essence of the decision will remain intact. Pluto losing its planethood is pretty clearly the right call - it's just a pretty unremarkable Kuiper Belt object which was found basically by accident because someone was looking for an as-yet undiscovered 'planet X' which was gravitationally affecting the orbit of Neptune. He spotted Pluto in roughly the right area, but later we found that Pluto is waaay too small to have any real effect on Neptune. There are bigger rocks out there in the Kuiper belt, and so unless we wanted to give planethood to Ceres (biggest Asteroid), Charon (Pluto's moon), and a bunch random rocks in the outer Solar System, it only makes sense to draw the line so that Pluto and other Kuiper belt objects are excluded. Who wants to have to teach schoolkids that there are 20+ planets, but only 8 count for anything? Who wants to have to make a distinction between "planets which matter", (as in gas giants and inner system worlds), and "planets which don't" (Pluto, Ceres, Charon, other bits of junk in the Kuiper Belt)?

Does Uranus count as a planet in your system then? I suppose it would, if he had a kinky fetish or was really drunk and felt like experimenting.
