Concept:
A land which gives your creatures protection from a particular color, faster than the stack.

Implementation:

Secret Soil
Land
T, pay one life: Add 1 to your mana pool. Use this mana only to pay for activated abilities of lands. Target creature you control gains protection from a color of your choice.
"Dust if you must, but there's not much time."

Current wording:

Secret Soil
Legendary Land
Whenever you tap Secret Soil for mana, you may have target creature you control gain protection from a color of your choice until end of turn.
T, pay one life: Add 1 to your mana pool. Use this mana only to pay for activated abilities of lands.
"Dust if you must, but there's not much time."

As you can see, to counter a targetted split-second spell costs you a land-drop, and likely 2 life. PLUS the land isn't all that useful outside of a split-second foil, or an instant speed way of saying
"Counter target spell which targets a creature you control."

Is this too far outside the color pie? Is it not good enough? Thoughts?

How about:

Secret Soil
Land
Secret soil comes into play tapped.
2 T, pay one life: Add 1 to your mana pool. Use this mana only to pay for activated abilities of lands. Target creature you control gains protection from a color of your choice.
"Dust if you must, but there's not much time."

Although i'm not sure about the color pie....but i prefer cakes anyways Wink

Put an "until end of turn" clause on the protection.

It's not technically against the rules, but I am not a big fan of targeted mana abilties in general.

Secret Soil comes into play tapped.
{T}, Pay one life: Add {1} to your mana pool.
Whenever Secret Soil is tapped for mana, target creature you control gains protection from the color of your choice until end of turn.

Now, it uses the stack again, but it still gets around split second.

How about choosing a non-legend creature? Otherwise he is a UG instant Wrath of Frog.

Wouldn't the triggered ability wait until the split second card was off the stack before going on?

Split second is a static ability that functions only while the spell with split second is on the stack. "Split second" means "As long as this spell is on the stack, players can’t play other spells or abilities that aren’t mana abilities."

I agree that it needs the until eot clause.

It's a triggered ability, they are not affected by split second.

I'd recommend making it legendary; otherwise, this would be an auto 4-of in a number of decks based around lifegain.

I agree.

And I've made it a trigger per parallax's suggestion since I understand split second a little bit better now.
