I'd like to congratulate Godder as the winner of 3CB Tournament #90! It was another low turnout this time around, unfortunately, so here's hoping we get a few more for 3CB Tournament #91 - Christmas Edition Broken Extravaganza. Yet again, while there were some old classics (including my own deck!), there were also some more new decks running around, which is good to see.

Karakas was rather common this week, and ended up being a useful enough metagame choice, especially against the Lotus -> Legendary Creature decks. It's nice to see some innovation as well, even it was, once again, a classic that got the job done in the end.

For next time: The Christmas Edition broken extravaganza! If you play a deck that doesn't use cards from the list below, or breach the rules at the bottom, you get a 30 point bonus. Please note that cards must still be legal in Vintage.

Card list:

Mesmeric Fiend
Nezumi Shortfang
Blackmail
Cabal Therapy
Abandon Hope
Pulse of the Dross
Pox
Mind Swords
Smallpox
Coercion
Nullstone Gargoyle
Form of the Dragon
Ghost Quarter
Strip Mine
Wasteland
The Rack
Balance
Glacial Chasm
Trinisphere
Null Chamber
Any deck that can force the discard of more than one card per turn
Any deck that can goldfish on turn 1
Any deck that can't win if the opposition does nothing e.g. Mishra's Workshop, Trinisphere, Wheel of Torture (aka The Mise Prize, given out to decks that score lots of 2-2 draws)

3-Card Blind (3CB) is a very unique game. With thanks to Zoneseek, the rules are as follows:

  • Your deck comprises 3 cards, all of which start in your hand.
  • The library starts at 0 cards and you have no sideboard (Wishes fetch nothing).
  • Random effects always go in your opponent's favour.
  • All hands are revealed, so you always make the best possible play.
  • You don't lose as a result of not being able to draw a card. If cards are put into your library, you draw normally.
  • Other than the aforementioned, normal Magic rules apply.
  • Decks are played against each other deck twice by the Moderator, once going first, once going second. For each win, you score 3. For each draw, you score 1. For each loss, you score 0.
  • While it may seem obvious, decks may not use cards from the 3CB Banned List. Illegal decks and decks with illegal cards will be rejected.

To make an entry, PM your deck to Godder in the following format:

Subject: 3CB Tournament #91 Entry or 3CB Tournament #91 Revision
Deck Name
Card #1
Card #2
Card #3

Optional Deck discussion, random sucking up, etc.

Entries close December 22. Players may enter up to two decks, but I reserve the right to restrict entries to one deck per player if sufficient entries are received, so please designate your preferred deck, just in case.

Shouldn't the number of bonus points depend on the number of contestants?  For example, with 30 points and this week's 10 decks, the correct deck is never going to be something broken, since even a bonus-recieving deck that almost never wins on the draw but usually does on the play, like some of the Trinisphere lists, will be better than a broken deck.  3 points per round times 9 opponents equals 27 points, or 57.  A broken deck could win every round and have 6 points times 9 opponents, or only 54 points.  You should definitely base it on turnout so a broken deck has a prayer of winning.  30 points would be fine, for example, if there are 20 decks, since a Mise Prize deck will earn only 3*19+30 = 87 points, while a perfect no-bonus record will earn 19*6 = 114 points.

2   Naphtali   -   Anvil.dec   -   City of Traitors   Anvil of Bogardan   Nether Spirit
vs
8   Franz Ferdinand   -   Man of Mysteries   -   Black Lotus   Karakas   Grand Arbiter Augustin IV

Current: 1-4
Suggested: 3-3

On the play 2's anvil will prevent Augustin from getting into play. Nether Spirit isn't legendary so Karakas can't bounce it, so the spirit wins.

Naphtali: Fair enough, results modified.

I made it a set bonus because that way people could have fun trying to guess whether it was worth it or not, but I will try something a little different next time.

Lotus, Show and Tell, Angel of Despair can't win if the opponent does nothing because the Angel is destroyed by its own comes-into-play ability, so it would count as breaching the rule against Mise decks.
