So this morning I woke up and asked myself why do I play Vintage. I was wondering if it is the use of the old cards, the pure brokenness of the format, or just it simply appeals to me the most. I later realized it is the pure brokenness of the format and how a turn can last 20 mins and still not be board of playing. So I am here to ask all of you, why do you play vintage?

I think you answered by yourselve for the most of us The pure brokeness and interactivity of the matches. The better question is "why doesn't all play vintage?"

Because I don't have to buy new cards and find a new deck for the 5 times a year I want to go to a tourney.
Also, it takes up a lot less effort to keep up with Vintage then it does to be competative in a format like Standard or Extended as the metagame changes a lot less frequently in Vintage.

I guess on retrospect it would mostly be the pure brokenness of the format. It leads to a ton of fun in games, even in the long ones. That and I got sick of trying to stay on the Standard treadmill.
If I were to be putting the money I am saving by not playing Standard into a bank account specifically for power and duals I should be able to have a full set of each in just under two years. That to me says I was spending way too much time, money, and energy on a format that is very fleeting at best.

I totally agree with you about standard, I'm just at the point where I have been playing for so long that I can play both. Since were allowed 10 proxies I can practically build anything with a set of duals, fetches, and FOW's.

I totally agree with everything said in this thread, and I would like to add: Because Eternal players tend to be more my age and laid back then standard / extended players who seem to mostly consist of 14-18 year olds.
Who either take their selfs WAY to serious or not at all. The average "eternal crowd" seems to be more into the mid / late twenties which just makes it easier to hang out with if you are also around that age (like me and i guess the most of you guys here).

Totally agree with Marske's view on the eternals being better formats social for those of us who are college grads and/or grad students.
But, vintage over legacy (which is much harder than Vintage over, say, block constructed) is all about being able to play with a few cards that are a whole lot of fun but would ruin Legacy as a format. For me, that's Oath of Druids and Mana Drain. Legacy has actual support from Wizards, more deck diversity, and costs less.

It's the only format that Yawgmoth's Will is legal in.

I play because it is fun, the cards are awesome, and the cards look sexy.
That and I hate to keep up with new cards and I like my Yawg will insane plays with good under costed old stuff.

I'd say the main reason I play Vintage is because I want to be able to play with all of my favorite cards from over the years. Nostalgia definitely plays a part in it too. Foil. German. Worldgorger Dragon.
Ahhh, yes. This too.

No one really quits the cardboard crack, it is all just an attempt to avoid the truth...vintage magic is like a drug that feels good and doesn't hurt the body to boot!
