So i was planning on not going to chicago this weekend for several reasons. For one i had a formal the night before and didnt want to get up early and drive, and second i was scheduled to work all day sunday. So around 11:30 satuday night i call spooky and ask him when hes going to pick me up inthe morning. I manage to get an hour or two of sleep and wake up and get ready to go making sure to call into work with some bull shit excuse.
Im borrowing my drains and walk out for this tourny so i was planning on playing shops. Were driving in the car for a while when i decide why play shops when i can jsut play pitchlong. So i begin to build my usual version in the car.
This is what i end up with...
3 Underground Sea 1 Swamp 1 Island 4 Polluted Delta 1 Flooded Strand 1 bloodstained mire 1 Tolarian Academy 1 Timetwister 1 Mind's Desire 1 Mox Emerald 1 Mox Sapphire 1 Mox Ruby 1 Mox Jet 1 Mox Pearl 1 Lotus Petal 1 Black Lotus 1 Sol Ring 1 Mana Vault 1 Mana Crypt 4 Force of Will 4 Brainstorm 2 Misdirection 3 Grim Tutor 2 Tendrils of Agony 1 Vampiric Tutor 1 Mystical Tutor 1 Demonic Tutor 1 cruel bargain 1 Yawgmoth's Bargain 1 Necropotence 1 Yawgmoth's Will 1 Tinker 1 Memory Jar 1 Imperial Seal 4 Dark Ritual 3 Cabal Ritual 1 Chain of Vapor 1 Rebuild 1 Ancestral Recall 1 Time Walk
So the pairing are posted and the tourny begins.
Round 1 Matt Morrison (u/w/b counterbalance fish)
Game 1 i really dont remember a ton about, but i remember it going longer than expected but i am able to resolve a desire for 9 that shows me a grim tutor that is all i need for the win.
GAme 2 Morrison is starting to get the beats going with a confidant and mage until i am able to hardcast a sundering titan from hand. A few swings from the titan and the game is over.
2-0 1-0 for the day
Round 2 Spooky (spooky stax)
Game 1 i kinda get an ideal hand vs stax. i play land, mox, sol ring, time walk, drop another land and play a twister. The twister isnt very good it gives me a fow, mystical, jar, adn 4 land. luckily jeremy doesnt have anything real explosive. i play the jar and pass during his turn i for a threat and jar during my turn for the win.
Game 2 he starts with a turn one orb of dreams following it up with other threats like stack adn sphere and im never quite able to get yself out of the whole im in.
Game 3 i play a few permanents turn one and pass. jeremy throws down a welder adn a chalice at one with some moxes. i draw play a land and pass. jeremy draws and double wastes my lands. i draw fetch out a bayou and play crime and punishment taking out 2 of jeremys moxes adn his chalice leaving him with only a welder in play. he wastes again. he welder beats me down to 4 or 5 before i see another black source and combo out.
2-1 2-0 for the day
Round 3 Ben (u/w Fish)
Game 1 I get off a desire at nine which finds me a tendrils on the last card for the win.
GAme 2 he is starting to get some pressure on me with a null rod and mage but i manage to resolve a bargain. he chants me so i have to pass turn. he swings and plays a grunt. i untap and go down to one life. i start to build storm with some moxes rituals and a chain of vapor. i get to spellcount 7 and im sitting with both tendrils and desire in hand. i figure he probably has trickbind in his deck so i start off with a desire for 8 he tricbinds desire. i find a ruby wiht the one copy of desire and then tendrils him out for 22.
2-0 3-0 for the day
Round 4 jesus roxas (control slaver)
Game 1 i set up a turn 3 tinker for jar with protection and pass the turn. on the following turn i jar and play a will but i am only able to storm up to a tendrils for 16, but i have placed a twister on top of my deck for next turn. jesus continues to draw more cards but not much else. i untap and play my twister and play a small tendrils the following turn.
Game 2 i keep a really risky hand that is petal, xantid, wumpus, recall, ritual, necro, cabal i figure he has to have a turn one counter but if i draw a land or another on color mana source i probably win easy being able to bait with something like xantid or recall first. i dont draw the land and he drains my turn one necro. i am able to eventually get xantid in play and then a wumpus but jesus on his turn play a tinker for dsc and then a will so i jsut scoop. wanting to have plenty of time for game 3.
Game 3 jesus mulls and i resove a turn one recall and necro which leads to an easy turn to kill.
2-1 4-0 for the day
Round 5 draw with jim playign ichorid
Round 6 draw with mark playing fish
Top 8 Vroman (uba stax)
Game 1 is really close. i jar at one point but only am able to play a grim tutor for lotus so i can play the necro in my hand. a few turns later i play a rebuild during my turn and then a grim tutor for will and pass the turn. in know vroman will lead with crucible so i fow it removing recall not wanting him to waste one of my lands. he then plays a chalice and welds it into null rod. i untap and play a cabal rit off my 2 lands with thresh into will. i play 2 cabals tons of artifacts academy and rebuild one again. im sitting at 3 life now so i cant jsut tutor for the win. but i have a brainstorm in yard as well as a jar plus the twister in my hand. so i can effectively see 17 cards atleast. i play the brainstorm first adn find mystical. paly mystical for tendrils paly and sac jar gg.
Game 2 vroman leads off with a tormods and whatever the other card was that stole a card from my hand (see vromans report) i untap and draw one of my whumpus play it and am pretty sure it will go the distance knowing that vroman probably has 1 or 2 answers tops. WUMP WUMP!!
2-0 5-0-2 on the day
Top 4 Unkown root (5c stax)
Game 1 he leads off with a chalice at 2 i play a turn one bargain mistake on his part. i win on turn 2
Game 2 he leads off with a chalice and a leyline. i paly a land and pass planning on playing vault and tinker on turn 2. he plays a in the eye which i decide is worthy of my fow, but then he follows it up with a demonic for shop into chalice at 1. i paly another land and pass. kevin does the same. i play another land and and grim for my rebuild. kevin contiues factory beats and passes. i draw and pass. kevin does the same and i paly an eot rebuild and am easily able to combo out on my turn.
2-0 6-0-2 on the day.
Finals spit with Dan Carp the apparently lucky gifts player.
The tourny was a lot of fun and had good support with 44 people showing up for the set of arabian nights. This was the first tourny i played pitchling for a while since ive been playing slaver almost constantly lately. Pitch long is still very strong but has seen very little play as of late.
Stax made quite a resurgance at this tourny with there being an sbundant amount of shops. Some may say pitch has a bad matchup vs stax but its actaully one matchup i look foward to playing. i went 6-1 in games vs stax on the day only being on the play 2 times both of which were against seroogy.
In conclusion it was worth skipping work to win my third tourny in as many weeks. Splitting with a teammate each week continuing ICBM dominace in the chicago and wisconsin area.

Congrats on the finish Tommy. I like this list alot. I can understand why you used no sideboard... Youre just that damn good. How many Wumpus did you play? Any Duress? - Dave Feinstein

there were 2 wumpus in the sb and no duress. I didnt care to list a sideboard for the deck mainly because my sideboard never seems to matter that much the main is just that good.

I wanted to be there to beat you down with my eternal oath deck again but fate would not have it as my brother decided to come into town over the weekend. Congrats on yet another win at pastimes, though.

I was surprised to see that you brought in the Wumpus against CS. If your boarding out 3 cards already for 3x Xantid Swarm what else are you taking out to find room for 1-2 Wumpus. I have a hard time finding 3 cards I don't like to take out against CS.

im trying to remember exactly what i boarded out i think it was something like this
- 1 island - 1 rebuild - 4 fow - 1 mis-d - 1 swamp
+ 1 wumpus + 4 xantid + 1 titan + 1 bayou + 1 trop
I had an extra land and an extra xantid than i usually due because around here has been drain central for the most part.

Congrats Tommy. It never surprises me to see you win a tournament. I just realized in all the tournaments we've played at, I don't think we've ever played. Maybe that will change whenever GU has their tournament in january.
I was playing next to you when you played Morrison. I had to refrain myself form just laughing when you hardcast the Titan against him. That was just awesome.

yeah i dont think we ever have played phil and we have been at alot of the same tournys.
As far as the topdeck ritual i could have drawn just about a million different thing from my deck at that point that woud have been insane. i had 6 mana sources in play and my hand was someting like ruby, chain (mage was naming chain), fow, minds desire. A simple land would have let me play titan.

Congrats Tommy. I wished we could have playing the semi's because it would have been stupid. Combo mirrors will always be that way.

my sideboard strategies tend to be a little wierd one in a while when i play pitch long. i know that we talked about weather to take out tinker or not against stax and you said that you would, the more i thought about it i won a ton of games against stax that day with tinker for jar or just hardcast jar. bringing in the titan against vroman isnt exactly the best strategy i really only do it because i know he has very few answers to an early creature threat.
yeah combo mirrors are usually pretty silly. i havent had to play one since waterbury i think where i played three of them. Also your deck looked pretty crazy you should show me the list sometime.
